[QUOTE=Cali-Shooter;7115759]I wouldn't hate on the .357 Sig so much if it weren't so impractical and expensive. For pretty much the same performance and in most cases, price, one could just pick up premium .40 S&W or bulk buy a nice stash of low grain, high velocity JHP's and not have to get a gun chambered in such a niche cartridge.

    Rounds that I consider worthless:
    .25 ACP

    Rounds that I consider overrated:
    .32 ACP
    .380 ACP
    .357 Sig

Rounds that seem to exist for no apparent purpose (i.e. a solution to a problem which doesn't exist):
    .45 GAP
    .357 Sig
    .41 Action Express

    Rounds that I consider underrated:
    9mm
    .40 S&W
    5.45x39mm
    .22 LR
    .410 Shotshell
    10mm

Rounds that I consider as "novelty" or impractical:
    .30 carbine
    .45 LC
    .50 Action Express

NOTE: These are all just opinions! My 2 cents.[/QUNTE]

+1000. Agreed. Especially the 357sig and gap. It has no real purpose. Imo its only kept alive due to it fanboys and some political pressure.
"Screw U guys, I'm going home"...:the great Eric Cartman

    10mm. Because .45ACP just doesn't cut it anymore. <Trailerparktrash>

I can't believe no one said the 5.75 velo-dog was the worst of all time. I don't think that there any velo-dog fanboys out there.

Realize that the .30 carbine and .45 LC at one point were the newest and best in technology. They're just obsolete in 2011, other cartridges have taken their place.

^ ^ ^ They are not very efficient for sustained use today, most of them have prohibitive costs to continue to shoot it (esp. if you're not a reloader for .30 carbine or .45 LC). I own an M1 carbine and I have to stash up some surplus target ammo before taking mine out to blast targets.
Until then, it's a zombie gun, love how it can mount a bayonet though incase you run out of ammo

Yup. It's not that they suck, they're just obsolete in today's world. More perfected rounds and firearms with much more capacity are available today.

.445 SuperMag and .357 Maximum. Never caught on, didn't do much more than factory rounds, and damaged the guns they were made for.

I understand that .357 Maximum is still a pretty popular niche in TC Contender and Encore offerings.

I would have to say the 17 mach II. Just never really understood the point of it. Like the 17 HMR though, accurate little round for sure.

                              This.

They're both fine cartridges depending on how you use them. If you handload, .45 Colt is a wonderful round -- effective, extremely flexible, easy to load, brass lasts forever. All qualities that were needed 120 years ago.

As for .30 Carbine, recall that at one time the M1 Carbine was the preferred problem-solver of LAPD SWAT. With SP or HP ammunition it's undeniably effective. Range is short, sure, but I have no trouble clanging steel to 300 meters, plenty for a carbine. Blast and recoil are soft even compared to a .223. The biggest problem with .30 Carbine is legislative, since many places won't let you take deer with it.

If those are "bad" choices, what about something like .300 RUM? Rebated rim, so despite it's power it's not a good choice for dangerous game. Way too loud, powerful, and flinch-inducing for non-dangerous game. Some people buying these high-powered calibers really don't have a need for them and wind up wasting money, cutting into their practice time, developing bad habits, and wounding game they'd have been able to anchor with a less feisty cartridge.

I'll grant this caliber has a niche, but I'd argue it's a good choice for only a few individuals.

There's a few calibers that are just plain useless, though. 8mm Nambu comes to mind.
