So, "technically" local pd cant charge me if I don't lock my long gun? I live basically across the street from a school and 3 min from my local range.

just be low key when putting them in the car/truck, you know some people will freak out if they see you with them.

No, but they can hold you and summon a Federal Marshal (or somebody - I don't know who actually would have authority there). I doubt they would do that, and if they did, I'd kind of expect the Feds would laugh it off, absent some political advantage associated with a high-profile case.

To OP;
In the desert I would be watchful of Border Patrol. Not that they necessarily would, but if they are patrolling the area your shooting in/driving through they are a federal LEA and can enforce the above post about long guns.

I try to be low key about it, I put my ar in a fishing pole bag, but it barely fits now with an optic on it. I have nice hard case for it but to me it screams rifle. I'll use that case for long travels to the mountains and stuff

All cases locked, trigger locks and ammo in the trunk. better safe than sorry.

I always keep my rifles and pistols in their cases, locked, and ammo near by-but never in the same container. My ammo is always in .50cal tins in the trunk.

I've seen Sheriff's coming out on the dirt road we go in, but they're in low sitting cars so I don't think they go in that far. Probably just lookin for trouble makers. No border patrol in the mojave area.

Did a search and didn't find anything on it, but what about transporting via motorcycle without a trunk? Is a backpack equal to that of a glove compartment? Excuse my newbie-ness

In soft cases and or hard cases, ammo in an ammo can, no locks.

Trunk is not required, just convenient.

I'd recommend a locking soft case in that backpack, since IMO backpacks are not especially 'secure'.

I have a pickup.

I, unfortunately, live in a population center and have to travel through several population centers to get to my destination (range, hunt location, etc.).

Ammo in range bag or dedicated bag just for ammo. All firearms (handguns, rifles, shoguns) each in their own hard, locked airline certified case. This should cover me for FGFSZ and GFSZ.


NRA, Leupold, NRA 2nd Amendment Task Force, Bowhunting Club, and American flag stickers plastered across by back window.

Just picked up a couple hard sided briefcases at a yard sale big enough to hold certainly two handguns each. Just have to get some foam padding.
