I'm curious how you came across the dope, since growers usually try to hide their patches far away from the established hiking trails... ???

consider being real lucky. Next time be packing. Don't just carry 1 mag or 10 rds. Imo 3 loaded mags and atleast 50rds on the side. I remember a few years back, a hunter was shot and killed by pot farmers up in norcal. One of my relatives was also surround by farmers armed with ak's and 'banna clips' when he accidently walked into the fields while huntn squirrels with a shotty in El dorado Nf around the hwy50 area. They took his info and threatned to kill him if he snitched. So considering just packn the sidearm is a BARE MINIMUM. Almost every encounter that I've heard from friends, the farmers are either armed with AK's or AR/m16 or shotguns. That is why I now no longer carry the bolt rifle for big game hunting. It's the AR only now and not just me 60% of my hunting party(all the guys I hunt with) are hauln AR's for hunting for this same reason and all of them have sidearms. Hunting here is Not like it USED to be 50yrs ago so all you old timers that insist on having just a bolt rifle and 10rds for big game hunting in kommifornia need to get up to speed on reality.

I would be worried that since they HAD his info, they would have come for him or family anyway at some point...and threaten to kill him??....sounds like there should have been some Triple S .....

THIS is why I ..... when hiking offroading,travel,camp,etc...I do not really worry about 4 legged mother nature creations....

On a note- I was not there on this trip- but a friend of mine and some others were cammping out on El Mirage dry lake when one night while sitting around the fire, some tweeker shows up with a rifle-with a bent barrel- and yells at them to 'get off his lake'...while pointing the rifle at each person in turn...long story short..they got the idiot to leave and once they calmed down..my friend mumbled 'yea figures...the ONLY time I dont bring my Glock....' the others looked at him and questioned this, he told them yes EVERYTIME he goes out he is armed,,they were shocked..he said 'well what would you do if the tweeker started shooting?? I know what I would have done....'' he has not forgotten since..

You could have a pocket holster for a micro pistol, or a belt pack for something compact without the chaffing being a big issue. Having it concealed would also keep you from getting confronted by LEO's after being called in by some panicked sheeple who spotted a "man with a gun onoes..."

Frankly I think if your county allows it you should obtain the permit for this and for other purposes.

I never go out in the forest un-armed. Take La Brea fire a couple years ago that was started by pot farmers....I hunt and hike right by there for the last 15 years but never saw anything, however my glock 23 as well as whatever long gun I'm using is with me, loaded at all times (it is legal in the colson/ miranda pines area/public national forest).

Yes they got his info, but in this case what can he do. From what I was told, he had gotten surrounded by 6-7 farmers all totn AK's and hicap mags with NO bullet button thingy's :O. My relative is an older fella in the 60's and he's just packn a remy semi 12ga loaded with just a high capacity of 2+1 and half a box of shells so the SSS isn't such a great ideal AT all in this case. The good thing is atleast they've held their part of the bargin and left my relative alone. It's been almost 10yrs since.

Lol... Actually while hiking a lady & her hubby startled a Grizzly who had her cubs with her... Grizzly charged them, man told wife to run, she did & then stopped & played dead... Grizzly killed man & picked up woman by her pack & dropped her... We were in Yellowstone that day & saw a Grizzly but a different one...

From one of my LE friends, Carrying a loaded firearm is a misdemeanor.
Not carrying one could bring harm or death.

Weighing that, I'm a Mr. Meaner.

                            YMMV

it is legal to carry a loaded unconcealed firearm in a national forest. When backpacking, I used a "tanker" style holster for my 1911. The gun rides at about the middle of your chest/diaphragm and is easy to reach even with the shoulder straps of your pack pulling your shoulders back.

Always packing when we go hiking(gun and large plastic bags). Did I state real large plastic baggies.
