I messed around and messed around with trying to light my safe and finally just put a 4 foot fluorescent lite in the ceiling above the door to the safe. Doesn't take up any room inside and works great.

Battery powered LED lights usually do a good job. I got some that have lasted almost a year on the same batteries, I was expecting to have to change them every few months.

I'd suggest having some sort of battery powered light. In the event of a power outage, you'd still want to be able to see inside your safe.

I stuck 3 of the cheapo harbor freight "Tap Lights" in my safe because it doesn't have a place to mount electrical without drilling through which I'm not willing to do. It was a cheap easy fix. I also have my garage some big halogen work lights that when I walk in, I plug in the lights and one is facing my safe so when I open it up, its like daylight inside.

My safe had the cutout for runing electricity into it. To that I connected a motion sensing plug. I strung a few sections of the 'rope' light under the shelves. It lights up real nice. Only down side is the plug/sensor is on the floor and nearly covered by rifles. So it doesn't always turn on when the door opens- most of the time- otherwise I have to lean over and wave a hand in front of it.
On the firing line- depending on the day, determines which side of the line I'm supposed to stand on!
