The Colt python in poor condition would get $250. EASY. And don't say he wouldn't make a profit. I know the pawn shop knew what they were worth!

I worked in a guitar store for awhile. One Saturday this guy comes in with an amazing 59 Fender Strat. The thing looked brand new. He wanted $300 for rent money. For a second I considered taking it and running, but that darn little voice told me no. I told him what he actually had and a ballpark price of what it was worth and sent him to a collector in Frisco. Sometimes I regret not giving the guy the $300, but then again I still can sleep well at night.

I have a hard time with people who screw other people for the hell of it. I wonder how they live with themselves.

If she went in there plopped the guns on the counter and asked how much will you give me for em. He replies hundred bucks. Don't see how you can call that a rip off.

With plenty of variations that fall on either side of the rip off line. Still, he's a pawn shop guy not Jim Supica. If I want an appraisal I'll go to an appraiser not someone who's best interests involve me thinking the item is as worthless as possible. If I do it's on me.

So in your opinion my afternoon in a gunshop scenario would actually take place ? I never said he didn't know the value. But he's not an appraiser people don't pay him to tell them how much their items are worth. His job is to buy things for as low a price as possible and resell them.

My grandma wouldn't be that stupid. But you're wrong, if she did that I'd still think the same way. It'd be her fault.

Uhh, I don't know what to say except, have you ever sold something in a pawn shop before? They will always try to lowball you. It's just the nature of the business. I used to live down the street from a pawn shop when I was in college and they had tools, guitars, radios, guns, and all kinds of stuff. Stuff most likely stolen since this was on Telegraph Ave near 60th Street in Oakland. They still bought things from people, even though a sensible ethical person wouldn't buy stolen merchandise.
It's just the nature of the pawn shop business, and most people know what to expect when they walk in the front door. The original poster's friend's wife is not one of them.

She went into the shop, probably asked the pawnboroker what he's give her for the guns and he replied $100. She said OK and walked with the money. Big whoop. Everyone finished out the day happy.

The pawnbroker didn't force her. Hold a gun to her head.

If I walk into a Circuit City and see a return/trade in on a McIntosh amp, and the store is asking $100, I take it. I don't try to educate the seller on what he should be pricing the item. Some days you get good deals.

The pawnbroker has no obligation to educate the customer.

As far as "stolen items" at a pawnshop - it's a myth. Pawnbrokersoperate on a very strict set of rules. One is a strict reporting system which includes Make, Model and Serial number on everything that is sold to them. They also take in your ID info. Then they submit the entire package of info to the police to be run through the NCIC.

There's nothing shady or unethical about it.
