Road trip within Ca and taking your gun.

I'm planning to visit my uncle in Yosemite this summer and was planning on taking my gun with me but I can't find out any info on how to transport it in my cars. I read some where you need to have the gun in the trunk and ammo inside the car but in my cars case I don't really have a trunk

I have 2 cars (unsure which I'm going to take) 350z which is like a hatch back and a Tahoe SUV.

Try the Calguns Wiki, top of the page. Search for transport there.

Before you spend anymore time and/or money planning this, you might want to check on firearms laws within Yosemite.

National Park, same as the law applicable in California for the area. To wit, open carry ok if not in a school zone or posted Federal Facility, permitted CCW ok except in posted Federal facilities, unloaded in a locked case ok, loaded in a campsite (not the entire campground) ok.

Open carry has to be unloaded because discharge is prohibited in the park.

TB, thanks for using the Wiki. Did your XD come in a plastic case with a small hole near the handles for a small padlock? That would do. Btw ammo can be in the case with the gun, gun has to be unloaded.

My uncle lives in mariposa I just used yosemite cause it's the biggest city near him. I haven't got my XD yet it's at bass pro shops waiting my 10 day. I got it from a northern cali company and they shipped it to bass pro shops for transfer but I believe it is the the plastic case not sure if it has the hole cause I've yet to see it

This XD case has a hole:

btw there are different rules for different places. State parks worse, National forests better, wildlife reserves WAY worse.

To be clear, ammo doesn't have to be locked up, you can carry it in your lap if you want. You cannot bring ammo onto a school CAMPUS, but it is ok in a school zone otherwise.

Ammo can even be transported in the same box as the gun. The gun can not be "loaded" though.

I saw MTM plastic ammo boxes with gasketed top at Turners for $9.99 I use several of them.

your trunk is a locked case if no pass through.

Edit* In your case with your cars you will need a locked case, but loaded mags can be anywhere except inside the gun.

I know its money and might not necessarily be what you are looking for but it's an idea. I always thought if you were going to travel long distances in a truck or SUV, it would be useful to have one of these:

Just something to think about. It's a got a locking push button latch, is made out of 16 ga steel, and replaces your center console. I'm pretty sure it would be legal to carry a handgun in there. Not to mention someone would have to pretty much steal the car to get at something in there, so its nice to keep other things in as well.
