Not really... I have a few and they're not total junk, but certainly not on the level of anything even as low as Kershaw, Gerber or CRKT. I'd say they're as low as you can go for a knife that's not total junk (MTech anyone?)

I've gotten two of those S&W knives at Big5 and both of them turned out to be not so good. The screws in the Homeland Security one came loose and the handle got all flimsy. I tightend them, but they still come loose. The big "screw" that the blade is attached to also became super loose, so much that the knife doesnt even stay folded. http://www.knivesplus.com/sw-homelan...y-sw-ck2b.html

I got another one, the "extreme ops" model, and the little nub for opening the blade broke off. http://www.knivesplus.com/sw-extreme-ops-sw-ck6c.html

I'm terribly unimpressed with these knives. It's not like I wore them out as I hardly ever use my knife for anything.

I got a Buck folder like this, http://www.oregonknifeshop.com/buckpilotknife.html , on sale at Turners for 10 bucks. So far it's working out a lot better than the S&W knives.

Nice blades jdberger, esp. the HAK and Lil Loco.

I had an Mtech in high school. Better quality than a lot of imported junk, but not (IMO) suitable for serious use due to the iffy liner and pivot/screw. I bought it for the 'finger flipper.' With a little practice and dexterity one could give a passable 'switchblade' impression.

Buck knives, especially the 110/112/etc., are good entry-level knives. Basic Spydercos & Byrd knives are nice also.

The number of firearms companies that sully their brand name with low-quality imported (rebranded!) airsoft guns and knives is astounding.

I've been thinking about carrying my OKC3 bayonet around..

But I think it will frighten people, and end up trying to explain open carry of a fixed blade knife is legal to the police..

I usually carry either the Ti-lite or Police model, depending on my mood. I have the little Kershaw to carry to school. Since its blade locks, it is sub 2.5" to stay within the rules of California schools.
I just picked up the CRKT Edgie for work. So far its really a great knife, I wasnt sure about the whole self-sharpening thing, but so far so good.

                K-12 school?

626.10(b) applies for college and university and there's no length limit there.

                  No, college...
I thought for sure the limit applied to all public schools (colleges and universities included).

I just looked it up, and Im really glad Im wrong. Cool, thanks for pointing that out DedEye. I cant figure out where I read (apparently mis-read) that now...

Ill probably continue to carry the Kershaw, just to avoid any unnecessary conflicts (even if I am in the right), plus all the "Hey isnt that a switchblade" comments are funny. Nice to know I can carry the "big" stuff if I want to though.

Understandable mixup, since 626.10(a) says 2.5" and under but only applies to K-12.

I really like the Kershaw Ken Onion assisted opening folders I've played with. I need to get one of those eventually. I still carry my just-shy-of-4" CRKT and have never had a problem.

Overall I think if you stay out of trouble you'll be ok. Obviously this doesnt always work, and weird stuff happens, but I have never had a negative run in with LE, and I have been carrying for a long time (even when I was a minor). It seems to me, LE use carrying a knife as an excuse to either get you in to trouble for something else, or more trouble once youre already in it.

Heck..."back in the day" whenst I was in school it was VERY common to have someone pull out a pocket knife in wood shop, auto shop, or even metal shop..to wisk a bur, cut a hose, etc....and no one cared jack. I remember FLYING for years with a foldable buck...always went off in the metal screener..always got the wand (the pat down before the days of the wand) and then the wave through.........

Ohhhh lordy, how we have fallen so far....................
