Think about it, if we don't attract as many new shooters as we can, aren't we screwed? I remember my first times on the boards here, and I was lost with all the lingo we throw around. I love guns, and mustered through it, and now use the shorthand slurrs in my everyday speech... but I see a problem... We are alienating the uninitiated. Who thinks we should add to the ''curse word'' filter all shorthand words, like BB, BBL, SBR, NFA, etc... just to make the sight much more pallatable to new browsers? I for one can type relatively fast, and wouldn't be bothered by a few more fractions of a second spent typing a message.

In addition, browsers directed to this site by GOOGLE may be steered away by there inability to decifer our language. On the aggregate, we could be steering away a portion of people from the interwebs that could convert from "eh, I don't know about guns" to "hey, this seems pretty cool".sigpic

I'm okay with that, and We need to get rid of shotty, Mossy, Middy, Bushy, Romy, and whatever other names That get cut and have a y added.Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

This I agree with. But everything has different acronyms and shortened terminology; it really makes things easier to communicate. Would you really rather say/type out "bullet button" instead of BB or "great bodily injury" instead of GBL, or "bolt carrier group" instead of BCG, etc.? It makes life easier. The catch is to not use shortened terminology with gun noobs.Comment

True story: BBL makes no sense to me.
I actually had someone come up to me at the Gun Show on Saturday and ask us about all the weird terminology we use. We said he was having a hard time finding info because he didn't know the proper abbreviations to use.
While there is SOME sense in toning down our use of abbreviations, it isn't necessary to actually ban the use of them.Beretta PX4 Storm .40 S&W (Round Count 3,050) | Yugo M72 | Romy M44

There already is one, it's even a sticky thread at the top of this forum. The reality is, ANY community that's related to a hobby is going to have it's own terminology. Custom PC's, paintball, home theater, hot rods, you name it. They all have their specific set of acronyms and shortened words that sound silly and completely foreign to people unfamiliar with it. Expecting a gun forum to end up being any different is silly since shooting is just as much of a normal hobby as the other things I listed.Comment

No.
One of the best ways a "newcomer" can become part of the tribe, and feel a part of, is to ask for help. This act crates a paradigm where nothing is taken for granted, and also reinforces their commitment to our community as a whole.Fools don't fit in the boots that I tread in.Comment

True but I do see a lot of threads bashing newcomers because they asked something that has already been asked before... if the same question comes up again whats the big deal if someone posts it again...Comment
