"Truck" Gun?

The latest edition of Shooting Illustrated has an article about "Truck Guns" or "Automobile Guns", which sparked my interest. They recommend a long gun, which I am all for, and I have, among my other firearms, a great and reliable Winchester 190 (Sears Model 3T) .22lr which I think would fit the script.

I have a couple of concerns: 1) a break-in (I travel the Bay Area a lot because I am in sales) and 2) ignorant law officers hassling me if they saw it in the back if I'm pulled over.

I would love to have this handy rifle, ammo and a bug-out-bag in my truck at all times, at least something if the S were to hit the fan and I needed to get home on foot or ward off "bad guys".

Ideally, a shotgun or my M1 Carbine would be best for this, but those are for my home bug out situations. I don't want to mess with handgun laws, so forget about carrying a pistol.

Anybody have such a set-up? Problems?

My 190 used to be my truck gun. I blew out a tire on the freeway in BFE the other year. Waiting for a tow truck driver holding a rifle wasn't the most inconspicuous thing. I've since switched to a pistol for concealability. Follow your local laws though.

Anyhow aside from the pistol (which you don't want) an 870 is my alternative, though I'm waiting for a nice folding stock so it will fit in a smaller bag. I don't need to be screaming "gun" if I have to use my chevrolegs to get around town. Hope this helps

Before the 'I gotta walk home' emergency, you do have to be careful about where you travel; the big problem would be any level of public or private schools, and there is a strong suggestion that Post Offices are also forbidden. You aren't really likely to be noticed for something in the trunk, but you need to know the risk.

And of course, no ammo in the gun itself; loaded mags or shells in a sidesaddle are fine.

I think a long gun poses a problem if you need to walk away from your vehicle due to mechanical problem, weather, etc. Plus, if you have a trunk gun for SHTF scenarios I'd rather have a gun that is concealable, one that won't attract any unwanted attention yet can be accessed at a moments notice.

Frankly I can't think of a more perfect truck gun you never even have to think about.

Yeah I just looked in to that prior case with Clark loaded sidesaddle seems to be ok. Anyone doing that?

Heres a question. How about a pistol grip only shotgun with a loaded sidesadddle in car? Would this be a grey area because federal law does not seem to consider such guns shotguns? And it is a weapon capabler of being concealed on the person.

Hmmm... if I was to pick a long gun to live in my trunk, I'd probably grab an SKS.
Semi-auto, 10 shots, easily reloaded with strippers, and much cheaper than an M1 Carbine.

I don't own a truck for my truck gun, but I personally keep what I call my "emergency kit" in whatever car I am traveling in. Its a small locked gym bag that includes water, food, flashlight, folding knife, batteries, screwdriver, emergency blanket, toilet paper, first aid kit, $200 cash......

and a Glock 26

I feel like I'm at least somewhat prepared for a wide number of situations I could run into.
