    Open carry at Newport Beach-Update

I am thinking about UOCing at the Newport beach pier after the gun show this weekend for lunch. Checked google earth and there are not any schools nearby. I am a greenhorn when it comes to UOC. Are there any restrictions in the area I should know about?? I plan to make some copies of the OC sheriff's UOC memo in case I run into some trouble. Any advice is greatly appreciated. PM me if you would like to join. I will be with my kids so no cussing and drugs

Spoke with officer Sandborn of the NBPD. He says the PD has been UOC trained, "BUT" they treat all gun calls like "gun calls." I guess that means they are not gonna walk up, shake my hand, and thank me for helping them deter crime in the community. Not sure about the school thing so I think I am gonna wuss out on this location. I know opinions are like a-holes, but I think the only way to get the police use to UOC is by practicing it, and if we have to, by taking legal action when 4A rights are violated. Thanks for all the input on the matter. Hope I did'nt offend any 1 with my sarcasm. I would'nt say anything on here that I could'nt say to anyones face and I know u guys can respect that.

Extra special thanks to those who offered to record. I am lacking in that techie department. Maybe we can hook up at a better location.

Just so you know NBPD get a little jumpy when they get a gun call.

You planning on going out by yourself?

they respond thinking your going to be breaking the law even if your not

I've seen them overreact to kids on a skateboard. I'm just saying. Do you have $20k set aside for a legal fund?

                  +100

NBPD will have you on the ground before you have a chance to say The Real OC Housewives.

I work daily with NBPD, good folks but yes, terribly misinformed. Just be prepared for the worse (sans being thrown off the pier ). If you plan on making a legal statement, carry your recorder and have the number for Jason Davis nearby.

At this time it's advised that people refrain from UOC for political reasons. If you're walking your dog in a dark park, sure, go ahead. But walking down NB with a gun is likely going to draw some looks and you WILL have NBPD rolling up to check you out.

Yes, it is your right to carry a firearm in public, no one will argue that. However, because of the bad publicity and lack of incorporation within CA, it's not a good idea. AB114 is on the books to ban UOC in the state, and this AB is far more reaching than just saying you can't UOC; it adds new penalties for unregistered firearms.

Also, CGF will not defend UOC cases at this time. It's been said that you need at least $20k set aside in case you're falsely accused of a crime.

If you want to make a statement, how about handing out information brochures, volunteering for a beach cleanup, or helping out at a CGF booth event.

Going out of your way to make a political statement is obviously your choice.

You will get LEO attention - Which way it goes is anyones guess - But putting your kids in the middle of it is a douche bag move....

If you have to ask questions like this, you should not be considering Open Carry (unloaded or otherwise) until you know a lot more., IMHO.

I believe that Newport Beach municipal code bans open carry. You should check that first.

There is absolutely nothing unlawful about PD holding you at gunpoint in this scenario. You are armed and your danger is unknown. They have every right to maintain officer safety and public safety by using appropriate tactics (Including pointing guns at you etc etc) to detain you and check your weapon. Do you really want that all to happen with your kids? Common now.

LEO's can not escalate a situation without reason. A holstered firearm is not enough reason to do a felony stop on someone.

Personally I'd leave the kids at home when being politically active, but that's just me.
