They are purchased by folks that cannot legally obtain a firearm.

Alas, if people had a little more integrity and didn't buy stolen items, we'd see far fewer guns stolen. Like others have already mentioned, thugs don't dig long rifles, so it's obviously not those guys buying stolen rifles.

buddy of mine had like 3 pistols and 2 rifles stolen. About 2 years later AZ PD called and said they had one of his firearms, a Kimber 1911. PD said it was recovered from a drug dealer's home. No grips, painted silver and black (LOL). Did he want it back? They said if he wanted a ballistics check run on it he would have to pay $250, otherwise the CLEO would provide a letter stating the gun was found in the possession of a felon. I guess this was to cover my buddy incase someone was killed with it? Otherwise the gun would be destroyed or sold to an officer. My buddy asked the CLEO to send him a receipt to use for tax deduction and sell it to an officer...he didnt want it back.

I had a shotgun stolen a long time ago and I did the reporting of serial # to the PD. Flash forward about 5 years later, I find out my gun has been recovered as evidence by LAPD... then it had been destroyed. I went to the station to ask what happened, they said they tried to contact me but didn't hear from me so they destroyed the gun. I have lived in the same location since I reported the gun stolen. Whatever.

In any event, tons of guns go missing every year. People trade them for cash, drugs, use them in crimes, ship them out of state or out of the country, use them, dump them, a lot gets thrown in lakes, oceans, dumpsters, etc.

Just think how much stuff you lose inside your own house, and now extrapolate that to the whole world. Even if someone just casually tosses it somewhere out of sight, what are the chances it would be found and if found, reported versus the finder just keeping it or continue the cycle of trading or selling it?

I've never seen nor given "proof" of ownership of a gun in a PPT, aside from "I want to PPT my gun to this guy."

and this is my point; you think you are getting a legit gun, but what protections are there?

kind of random, one day in 2005 I get a knock on my door from the SBSO asking if a knew or was related to a so and so. I said yes, she was my grandmother but was dead now. They said in one of these sweeps they had recovered a shotgun that had a matching serial number to one that was reported stolen in the 70's! I referred them to her surviving daughter and she got the gun back. Pretty cool I thought.

I ran a call with PD for an assault, the injured had a Series I Kimber Gold Match in his possession. I asked him where he got it. Bought it from a kid in the projects for 500! He was a felon, go figure.

That's silly there are rules against that from happening. A felon in possession of a gun can't happen it's written on a piece of paper that they said they wouldn't do that.

They go where I want to go when I die....
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Tis better to have Trolled & lost, Than to never have Trolled, at all.

I had a revolver stolen from my office a couple years back. I was really surprised at the little amount of info they gathered. No fingerprinting, no questioning of me whatsoever, other than basic info. Seems that they would interview the reporting party a little better in case someone wanted to report it stolen, then sell it on the black market, collect insurance, etc.

Maybe check some fingerprints to maybe be able to track down and remove a gun from the streets or something..

                        Just putting it out there..

This is why I started this thread, I have heard of this happening so I called Bakersfield PD last week (the event happened 5 years ago) and they were very helpful, they pulled up the case and stated the serial numbers had not been entered into evidence. Hence, they had not been recovered. When I filed the report I gave them my parents address as they have not moved for 30 years and will not ever move so this could never be an issue...i hope.
