Where do stolen guns go?

I/ Who in their right mind would buy that for the risk of being caught?
How say you....how are these stolen weapons sold on the street?

If you are a criminal do you really care HOW you came to have that gun? And a M1 is not exactly a stealth gun. Pretty hard to do a drive by with a gun with a 20 inch barrel.

I think selling stolen guns is pretty easy. There are plenty of people who will not ask a question when buying a gun. Ive had people try and talk me into selling them a gun without going through a FFL

I'd imagine ones that can't be traced back to the owners are destroyed. Although the last gun turn in claimed to search for original owners if they were stolen...

Alot of reasons they never turn up: Serial numbers ground off, shipped to Mexico, tossed in a lake, or the crooks just never get caught with them in their posession. Sometimes they get caught up in the legal system as evedence. The original owner will never even know the cops recovered it untill the per has gone through trial, used up all the appeals, etc. My friend got a stolen Glock back this way from the FBI. They had it for 8 years as a bank robber went through the legal system.

Stolen guns go to anyone that have a felony that cannot own one. I would never risk buying a stolen gun if it could be bought legal.

The big thing is being caught with a traceable stolen firearm. Those who purchase a weapon that they are told is ligit or unaware they should register of or just don't register their weapons( don't blame them honestly) could actually have a stolen firearm for years if they never have a run in with the law. I despize thieves, sorry to hear you were a victim.

When you are PPT'ing, is the FFL required to check the firearm in question against a DOJ master list of stolen weapons?

If not: (hypothetically speaking) I steal a gun, post it for sale on Calguns, sell it to Joe law abiding Calgunner through PPT at market price, and he goes on about his life thinking he has a legally acquired firearm.

Here is what happened to a friend of mine in So Cal several years ago.

He loaned a pistol to a guy he knew. The guy had a relative who had a friend who was a gang member. One of them stole the pistol from the guy's house. The gun was registered in my friend's name and he reported it stolen to the PD.

Some time later, the pistol was used in the murder of a police officer. The suspects were caught and convicted and the gun was recovered by the PD in another city where the shooting had occurred. My friend was unaware it had been recovered or that it had been used to commit a crime.

Some time after that, the PD and several other agencies decided to do a massive "gang sweep" one night. It was a big operation, involving the serving of dozens of search warrants, including one at my friend's house. Phone call at 2AM from the local PD stating they had caught someone out front breaking into his car, could he please come outside?

He opens the front door and is staring down the barrels of a SWAT team. They held him outside in his underwear for two hours while they ransacked the house. They took all of his guns, ammo, brass, reloading equipment, computer, etc. He was questioned about his drug and gang involvement (of which he has none), including questions in Spanish (which he does not speak or understand).

The next day, the agencies hold a TV press conference and display tables covered with "contraband" they recovered during the operation, including my friend's guns.

He was never charged with any crime (because he had not committed any), but was questioned on several subsequent occasions by various law enforcement agencies. After about a year and a half, his computer was returned (in pieces), but none of his other property has ever been returned. Eventually, he was told all of his guns had been destroyed.

At any rate, that's where stolen guns go. I can tell you I will never loan a gun to anyone as long as I live.

Your friend should have called CGF immediately after the incident. It's probably too late to get his guns back now.

Possibly. I know he consulted an attorney and was told he basically had zero chance of prevailing since federal agencies were involved.

It happened back in 2004 or 2005. He has been told the guns were destroyed.

Unfortunately, he pulled a stupid stunt about a year ago and is now a prohibited person. Up until that, he did not have as much as a speeding ticket on his record.
