Your buddy is a collector not a shooter. He's happy haveing his RAW in "unfired" condition and has his set of shooters, let him be.Originally Posted by Sic Boy

Hey Ed, I don't know...I think he needs a "reason" to shoot them...and I'm trying to coerce him to get them out and have fun with them...I WOULD feel bad if I thought that he might somehow regret it after the fact...but I just can't imagine....maybe we're just that different....hmmmm

Really, who is anyone to judge how they should or shouldn't shoot their weapons. Yeah, it's kinda sad that he never takes them out shooting, but they're his guns to do with what he sees fit.
I've never bought a firearm I didn't expect to put at least a couple thousand rounds through... a number of them never got that high because I get tired of stuff kind of easily and would sell to purchase something different.Comment

I just had another thought...knowing him as well as I do....I would bet that if when alls said and done..I told him that he was a collector not a shooter...he wouldn't like that...he'd say, "NO, I'll shoot them one day...just not now"Comment

ME! I'm one of his best friends! That gives me full license to judge him in all matters like this and bust his balls if I need to!
And thinking back...I believe he did remark that when he bought them it wasn't his intent to never shoot them....just when after some time had gone by..it was kinda like .... why shoot them when they were perfect, I guess....or something like that.

Well let me put it this way, I have some guns that I have never fired and probably never will. Am I missing out on some sort of life affirming act by doing that? No, I'm happy to shoot what I do and know that those guns are still "pure". I might enjoy shooting them in the moment but I KNOW I'll hate myself afterwards. I have a 1929 Winchester model 54 with a stainless barrel. kinda rare, maybe the $ value is not high, but go find one. even mr AR15Barrels didnt think it was factory (just seems like he has seen alot in his time) but I put a Nikon Monarch scope on it and have put maybe 100 rounds through it.
Different strokes for different folks. he has neat toys. right on!!! thats one of the many facets to this hobby is you can c & r, collect shoot, reload, cast your own, mall ninja, really its all good!
instead of trying to get him to shoot, another facet is the legal 2a thing. Maybe get him to sponsor a county for ccw, or help in a way that can help others like him expand our rights.
just a thoughtsigpic

Okay hang on a second. Maybe I don't fully understand the law here.
Why would an unfired RAW be any more valuable? You can't sell it within CA as a RAW, right? And if you move out of state it's just another centerfire rifle so who cares? It's even possible that we'll eventually unravel these arbitrary, unconstitutional laws and the RAW status will become meaningless. Am I missing something?Comment

my first reaction to this was "oh he can't keep living this way! he must shoot them! make him!"
but then I remembered I have a m44 sitting in my safe, unfired (by me since I bought it at big 5). It was the first rifle I ever bought, two weeks after I turned 18, I knew nothing about firearms and it took me a while to save up for it. There's nothing special about it since they're so cheap and abundant.
All my other firearms have seen their time on the range but not that rifle. It's just sentimental value that I placed on it. It's a silly notion I know but that's just me.Originally posted by chuckdcSounds like you can use your friend to activate your bullet button.. since he is definitely a tool.Originally posted by Vanilla gorillaIt is ok you don't need friends you have calgunsComment

Another thought.
Many people keep weapons like this for certain SHTF eventualities either shooting them or closeting them.
If I had to guess I'd say that most people who own weapons like this at least feel to some degree that they are armed for a more serious day.
Your friend by not shooting and being practiced with his weapons is, well, unpracticed.
Furthermore by not shooting them he may not be doing any favors to function either. How is he going to know about and fix that jamming problem caused by a misc x, y , or z, unless he breaks those weapons in and shoots a few boxes through them?
Maybe he does shoot them and is just selfish about letting others handle them. I've known guys who treat their weapons like fine works of art, never putting them on anything dirty, just cloth etc.
And other guys will toss those weapons around and say "It doesn't matter dude, It's built to take it"
Usually the first guy is not satisfied by the second guys statement of fact, and feels justified creating obstacles to repeat performances of someone else treating his weaponry with less care than he the owner.
Just speculating.
Your probably right tho, just a poser.Comment

Can't sell 'em in state and outside they are common. Laws gotta be changed...
And if he's saving them for the zombie apocalypse then he'll be picking a helluva time to test their functionality

Well, I say you put a Poll up, so I can vote poser.
I have a buddy with quite the selection of firearms, and a few RAW's. He is VERY particular about what he shoots through them, and also how they are handled....but he does shoot them! Why buy a gun you wont shoot......sigpic
