Well, considering you got some stuff FREE (as mentioned previously), the OP would need to be pretty lucky to build at that price.

IMO for your first one, treat yourself to a turnkey OEM AR-15. It will work right out of the box and you won't have to trouble shoot any problems resulting from you putting it together yourself. I assume you would get a mag locked AR for you first one. Check out riflegear for inspiration.

Shoot the heck out of your first AR. Now get components and tools to turn it from featured with mag lock into a featureless. Now you can run your preban >10 round magazines in it. This platform is now a viable defensive firearm.

Or, similarly, to get your feet wet,
            A Plumcrazy complete lower w/BB for 150, a DTI complete upper for 385, a 10 rd mag for 11, and a rear sight/carry handle for about 20.

Add shipping and transfer fees and you should be around 675 OTD.

It's a range gun/plinker/camp carbine that will help to learn the platform and where you might want to go later down the road.

All you'll need to do is pin the upper to the lower which is simple and something you will need to learn anyway of you want to clean it.

I had the same dilemma. Should I build one or buy one already done. I ended up spending 650$ on my build. Ive since then showed 3 friends how to purchase and build AR 15s for themselves. The cheapest AR i was ever able to build was for a friend of mine ( Cheapest meaning that it was built with extra new spare parts that were already paid for) i think the whole thing cost me 500$ total. When he came back from Iraq i presented him with it. He is slowly modifying it to be like the rifle he carried in Iraq.

i found out that its WAY cheaper to simply build a AR than it is to buy it. if you are willing to spend the money it would cost to buy entry to mid level one off the shelf, You can build a way better rifle for about the same price or a little more to get better components.
This is from a guy that the most experience with a AR was to take it apart and clean it. i knew absolutely nothing about actually putting one together

[QUOTE=tomd1584;5472440]OP, i suggest you read more about the platform. Here are a few threads to start:

"Oh No! I bought a BM/RRA/Stag before I knew better!

AR Technical Discussion FAQ?Knowledge Base Threads

Read what Tom posted in there. You will find a chart , Great info.

I just finished mine I try to post pics.
I went with a aero lower. and a dpms upper i purchased from a Calguns classifieds section. Great deals there. I got the upper with BCG for 300. built my rife for around 500.

Have you shoot an AR15 before? For some people, the AR15 isn't for them. Some of us are AK guys like myself. I just recently build an AR pistol in the past few months. Before I started building AKs, I shot an AR15 and AK47, I decided AKs are for me.

The thing I like about ARs is how customizable they are. I don't know anything about AKs, but are they fairly customizable (in comparison to the ARs)?? And can you build fairly cheap ($500-$700)?

I would recommend to build it. Or at least choose a lower and a lpk then get a completed upper to start. Its easy, heres my first AR. I finished a week ago i havent been able to shoot it . Cause of the weather and reloading ammo for it. I'll wait for another day.

                          Cost was around $550 lower with dros,upper,stock,lpk,mag lock , 10 rd.mag. everything.
Had to buy a 10rd mag cause i only have 30rd. I have a MMG but I havent decided to go that way yet.
I also have a featureless Wasr AK type rifle and mini 14. Ive been happy with with all. Im thinking of getting a saiga next.

Excuse the newbie oil smuge marks please.

It all depends on what you want to do to your AK. I prefer my AKs stock but I have seen people do different things to them. If you want an AR, get an AR. You can change a lot more things on the AR which equals to $$$. All the different bcg, ch, rails, sights, pistol grips, it's crazy.

That's a beautiful lookin AR. You'll have to let me know how it is after you get the chance to shoot it.

I'd love to shoot an AK so I can truly experience it and see what I like. Are AKs fairly easy/cheap upkeep? ARs have so many parts it can get pretty crazy.
