I give up! The more I try to explain this... the bigger the hole I dig. I am glad some of you find this funny. I don't blame you. Have a Merry Christmas.

You cannot shoot to protect property in California. If they were in their car, shooting would only be justifiable if they were in the process of running you down, or if they were shooting at you.

Running outside to confront them puts you on very shaky legal ground for taking a shot at them.

There's a home owner sitting in the Fresno County jail right now facing murder charges for doing just that. Seems his medical marijuana garden (there was something like 3 or 4 people in the house with cards so they had a lot of plants) could be seen from the road. Some less than honest citizens decided the need some medicinal marijuana. He confronted the burglars and fired a round from his 12 gauge threw the windshield of their pickup hitting the passenger in the head. Hey died a couple of days later. The home owner told the cops "He steal Me shoot. Constitution give me right to protect self".

Wow, just wow, I think everyone should know the laws of gun ownership. Making the decision to own a gun is a huge responsibility. I think some people feel empowered by it and act in ways they wouldn't normally. Especially when alcohol is involved.

You would have been much better off if you had started like this ^^^

Anyway, question has been answered. It is illegal to shoot someone to protect your property. You may only shoot if you feel your life is in immediate danger. Running out after a car leaving is not you being threatened.

Both of those things are "exceptions" in the penal code.
