I went to Iron Sights to do a PPT on a S&W M&P15 AR-15 lower half yesterday. I was the seller and they took our information and started the process. As the employee started doing all the required paperwork he stated that the buyer needed to bring in proof of residency. I tried to be polite and say this is a long gun and no additional documents should be required. Keep in mind his CA DL was valid and the address was correct on his DL. Then the employee said, yes it is required, and how he works with the DOJ and how he was correct. Which, he is NOT! Eventually another employee overhead the conversation and stated they take proof of residency as a "FORMALITY". California already has a lot of requirements and restrictions compared to free states, and having a FFL add their own requirements BEYOND what the FED/CA DOJ wants is ridiculous. It is worse that he said that proof of residency is required, instead of saying this is something we take to cover ourselves. People already have complications providing POR for handguns! Maybe he was new, but I will not be heading back there anytime soon.

Feds do not even require proof of residency!"This country has a mental health problem disguised as a gun problem, and a tyranny problem disguised as a security problem." -Joe RoganComment

Yes they do...but unlike CA they accept your ID as valid proof of residency. If your address is not the one listed on your ID, Federal law says you need something from a government agency with your current address on it.Originally posted by orangegloWelcome to failtown, population = you.Comment

That is what I was told, I have been using my Utility bill but it won't work for the fed requirement....Not Government issued. (my DL has my PO box on it)Comment

I agree, most people usually have something they can bring in but that is not always the case or the point. It causes more of a headache to complete a transaction, when it is not a required document in the first place."This country has a mental health problem disguised as a gun problem, and a tyranny problem disguised as a security problem." -Joe RoganComment

I did a PPT recently at Duncan's Gunworks in San Marcos. Smooth as silk, didnt ask more questions or need more info than is required by law. Kept to the $35. It's a little bit from Vista, but it was a good experience. Nothing beats Gusslers
but oh well.

It's just another FFL who does'nt like to do PPT's as required hoping they'll geta bad enough rep that people will not go to them to do PPT's. Very short sighted on the FFL's part but they usually cant see past the buck in front of them long enough to try to get repeat business.Originally Posted by Sic Boy

He's right, the Fed's don't care about residency, they care about identification. Granted, if you're transferring a gun in a state that you don't have proper ID for, then it becomes a residency problem, but only as far as the ID is concerned, but for the purposes of the OP that's better left for another thread. My posts are my own opinion and reflect no official positions of anyone other than myself.Comment

I get my share of people with PO Box on their license...mostly from some of the outlying areas of the county...for them it's usually either car registration or property tax bill...but some are lucky enough their water utility is county owned...so their water utility bill works
