To put things into perspective, I once owned an AR-15 and a 1911.

The AR-15 is no more, the 1911 is here to stay.

It was a Mega Machine/Bushmaster upper AR vs. a Kimber 1911 TLE/RL II

Good quote for military types, but I wonder how applicable this is to us civilians. Living as I do in a fairly dense urban area, I think I'd find a handgun much more tractable and usable than a rifle for any confrontation I'm likely to face.

Of course, I haven't fully factored in the threat of a zombie invasion.

What do you already have, and what are your objectives for owning these things?

            I have a glock 17 19 30 for handguns and a mossburg 500 for a shotgun.

Well then it is a tough call! Monies being an object, and assuming you have shot both the AR and 1911. I would suggest the 1911 first, as a build they are tough to find compaired to the AR, building is the norm for most! YMMV!

So ya know I own neither, have shot both!

The AR is like the 9mm of the rifle world.

                Get a rifle that'll compliment the 1911, the M1A.

It really depends on what shooting areas you have available to you.

I live down the street from a pistol range but would have to drive over an hour any time I want to shoot a rifle. Well, I could shoot the rifle at the pistol range, but an AR gets boring QUICK at 25 yards.

This situation leads to me constantly purchasing new handguns, because I can shoot them whenever I want with a moments notice, and ignoring rifles because I'm too busy to dedicate an entire day to shooting.

Since you already have HD weapons covered, I give another vote for the AR
