Depends on your experience. If you already know your way around a pistol and can afford it, go 1911. If money is an issue go with the AR, you can collect your parts over time instead of one big purchase. The biggest single expenditure with an AR will be an upper, since they are a little trickier to assemble than the lower and most opt to buy them complete. Or you could just get the 1911, then slowly collect AR parts while rebuilding your savings account. -

I built my AR and it has been sitting in the safe for some time now, but I now have three 1911s and can't keep my hands off of them. Shoot them all of the time and want to buy more. I know it's a sickness! Buy a 1911 it will become your new baby.Comment

^^
if you frequent outdoor ranges, go with the AR. If you are more at the indoor ranges, get the 1911.sigpicComment

well, my 2 cents, for what theyre worth.
if you want a fun tinker toy and need something to do, then by all means go with the ar15. theyre great fun, and there's always something you can fiddle with/upgrade, should you get the urge.
if you want a firearm to defend yourself with, keep in the car while traveling, and be an effective tool - should you ever need it - a good 1911 is hard to beat. you can lock it in a rug, toss it in your backpack, and do whatever it is you do on a daily basis.Comment

Thats a tough one, I have both. The AR build didn't take long with the exception of the decission process, they have more options than a new car. Cost @ $850. The 1911a1 @ $1200. Ammo .223/5.56 100rnds-$40 , .45auto 100rnds-$50 ( you can find it on sale or purchase bulk for cheaper). Lots of people sell their AR's for less than they paid, 1911 owner usually only sell out of necessity. So if you want a firearm virtually for life go 1911, if you are looking for something you can constantly upgrade and reconfigure go AR. Either one is a good use of your 2A rights
