Anyways, you say this happened in Cerritos. My second home is in Cerritos.
To this day, I still am in shock on how quiet it is and how pretty much everyone in the neighborhood values their privacy. An unfamiliar car on the side of the street will get noticed quickly. Unfamiliar people walking will get noticed quickly.

On one occasion, I am working in the garage. The side door to my garage leads directly to the central walkway on the front of the house. I leave to grab a drink (which took less than 10 seconds) and I come out to see three teenagers who I have never seen before trying to look into my garage from the sidewalk because I left the side door open. I knew immediately that these fools were up to no good and I confronted them. They hurridly walk away and I never seen them since. I hate to play the race card, but they were Mexican and janky looking and since I pretty much know that the neighborhood consists of Whites, Koreans, Indians, Filipinos.......they had no business around here. Two weeks later my suspicions were confirmed when my Z was broken into. Smash and grab and all they took was a work bag that I left on the passenger seat.

Everyone in Cerritos thinks that scumbags from Paramount or Hawaiin Gardens are coming in and scoping out the neighborhood.

painters may have made great lookouts

          call friends, lookout for them

Not going to cut it unless you have a well trained dog. Your average 'run of the mill outdoor/indoor house dog won't do a damm thing if you throw them some bbq.

I don't want to incriminate myself, but I know for a fact that to hush a barking dog, all you need to do is throw them a slab of ribs. That will buy you a few minutes to do some dirt.

About 13 years ago, some idiot punched a dent in my car (I strongly suspect) then had to gaul to hit me up and asked for $50 and he'd fix the dent with a "special machine." The dent was made on the side of the trunk. All I had to do was pop the trunk and punch out the dent.

This *** did this to my car. In front of my own house. I wanted to strange him.

He's sitting in his car with a friend and a kid in the back seat. I told him, and he then goes on to tell me that it's his son's birthday. I wanted to ring his neck, and the kid in the back is all giggles.

Trash just blows through here every so often.

So, it's been a while since this happened now.

The family has since moved out of that house, and most of them moved to Thailand actually. My parents have been in the same house in Cerritos since 1998, and still no troubles. I need to pop over and make an appearance more often as crime is getting worse again.

House next door has been broken into 3 times over the last year, last time was 2 weeks ago.
Gated, high fences, cameras alarms are no deterrent.

Big Dogs. I'm of the belief most criminals are more afraid of a huge a*s bark over a mid size 9mm. Lucky me, got both.

Sorry to hear this happen. Not every thief breaks in with the intention of stealing firearms. Some would think it's more harmful than good. Especially in CA where is you get caught carrying a firearm, it would cause more problems than if you caught with jewelry or cash. Some may target more personal info like SS #'s, bank info, things of that nature.

If you don't already have one, even a small safe bolted to the floor would be a solid deterrent. Something that you can keep personal info, and/or your handguns.

The other thing is surveillance cameras. The more the better. Not everything is 100% burglar proof, but the more harder you make it, then they'll move on to the next target.

1.) Burglary happened between 7am-12noon. Small window, and they had to have known the family's schedule.
2.) The living room was, for the most part, untouched. None of the expensive media was touched. Looks like burglars went through bedrooms and hallway closet mainly. They went through the drawers. They did *not* steal a handgun that was in one of the drawrs though. Odd.
3.) Mexican painters were painting the house next door and had a CLEAR view of the backyard. They claimed not to have seen anyone though. They were there since 7am.
4.) Within the last 4 months, their neighbors have also been burgaled.

I live 1/4 of a mile away. Makes me think of my own family's home security. Oddly, everyhouse around us has been burglarizaed within the last 20 years except for ours.
I am thinking the burglar was just filling their pockets, cash and jewelry.

Not taking the handgun may mean the burglar is a convicted felon. Possession of the handgun will send him back to prison.

In my neighborhood the most recent burglaries were masterminded by the cute female neighbor. She liked her drugs and her boyfriend(s) would break into the places she pointed out.

Yeah, that's a good point. Back when I was 18, I worked loss prevention, and you wouldn't believe the types that stole. Most thieves we arrested weren't down on their luck and desperate. Most were actually doing fine, but just like stealing. 70% of thieves are women too due to having those purses all the time that no one checks.
