    Savage vs. Remington rifles

Hey guys, I posted this in the centerfire rifles thread a couple days ago and got zero responses so I was hoping you fellas could help me with a decision.

I am going to purchase a bolt action rifle, and am torn between the two. On one side, the new savage edge xp, in .308, comes with a cheaper scope and rings and base and so on. So out of the box for around 400$ it's ready to go. It has gotten a pretty good review from a couple magazines I have read, in the quality for budget area.

Next is the rem 700 sps tactical .308. I love the feel of the stock and the barrel length/ ammo combo is great for distance and accuracy. But the rifle itself is about $600~ by itself. So I'm looking at roughly a grand with glass and such.

Which would you choose? Mostly for plinking around at the range, I don't really hunt, but would love to do some serious distance shooting. So is the rem worth the extra $$?

Probably has to do with what you want to do with it. Out of the box vs customize down the line.

I have had trouble finding a sps tactical rem but I'm sure I can find one eventually. The only thing I'm concerned about with the savage is the trigger. It's non adjustable, although I know there is aftermarket for that. That and the bolt design on the savage edge looks a little strange to me

Don't buy the Savage Edge, buy the regular Savage model 11 (or the package gun 11 XP, or whatever they call it) and it will come with the accutrigger.

Remy M700 SPS is a great gun...That is not apple to apple. If you go apple to apples, it will be close but I prefer Remy. I have shot both and like them both. The best part is they are both from NY.

When it comes to shooting, always buy the best quality. Otherwise you will be replacing and upgrading parts constantly. Remington is copied by so many other manufacturers that I consider it the standard. If you are going to have the action trued, I would recommend buying a Stiller action instead. A Stiller action will cost less than buying a Remington and having it trued.

I love my SPS tac. The first time I took it to the range, the guy two lanes over with a .30-06 came over during a ceasefire and told me with a big grin, "g'dam that summich is loud!". I have a swivel bipod and Nikon Monarch scope and it shoots way better than I can. +1 for the Remmy.

Savage triggers are adjustable. If you understand basic mechanical workings, you can easily adjust non-Accutriggers. I safely had mine at 2lbs.

If not, simply swap it with a Sharp Shooter Supply trigger.

No rifle beats Savage out of the box. So far, no rifle can beat Team Savage at international F-Class

                      This lol.

But I was in the same boat as you, I started off wanting the Savage Edge. Then I researched it and started looking at the Remington 700s. After debating with myself about barrel length, twist rate, and then the calibers. I opted to go for the Remington. At that point it took another turn for the worse. In came the different models of 700s... . There was the tactical, the varmint, the VTR, the XCR, it just went on and on.

In short, what I figured out was if you wanted accuracy without modding anything, go for the Savage. If you wanted to replace the stock or pretty much anything else, get the Rem.

Oh, and what inched me towards the Rem was because they are offering a rebate right now, certain models will get $40-$100 back. Something to keep in mind

I have heard savage is great out of the box, I'm just concerned that the new edge one is extremely cheap, and I have a feeling I would be replacing parts more often than the rem. I've heard the sps tac is a great out of the box rifle?

I believe it's been discussed here before and I have no personal experience with Savage rifles but it seems there's been concerns with extracting problems with the Savage bolt guns.

Savages are, well, more savage. They are not finished as nice. They aren't very pretty. I prefer Remington.

The Remington 700 has always been the gold standard but I have owned Savage rifles since the 60s when they were the only left-handed game in town. I have always gotten great accuracy out of them.

Rather than go low end, you might want to try:

You really can't make a mistake with either the Savage or the Remington
