My single handgun choice is a Glock 17 or 19. Yes those are 9mm, but if you are short on purchasing funds you are probably short on money for ammo. 9mm is still the best bang for the buck!

In a perfect world, I would choose a Glock 17 or 19 for the range and a 1911 for home defense and showing off....wait I have those (19 and 1911)...i'm perfect!!!

              I really want either a 40 s&w or 45acp.

the two guns ive been eyeballing are:

              RIA 1911-45acp

              or

              Glock 23-40 cal

which would you choose of the two or is there something better for that price range...?
I wouldn't say better, but I know you can get an XD 40 or XD 45 for about $550 to $575 here in the Bay Area.

I'd go with the Glock, but I'm biased since I have a G21 with some mods (ghost rocket 3.5lb disconnected, heavier recoil/firing pin springs, tungsten guide rod and tritium, fiber optic sights).

Shoots great, been super reliable. I've put about 4K rounds thru it with no problems. Shot everything I put thru it including Wolf/Tula ammo.

I'm not saying I don't like 1911's. I actually just picked up my second, got a SA 1911 TRP. My 1st was a S&W 1911DK. Both are great guns but definitely more than $650.

Don't know too much about the RIA 1911's so can't make a recommendation either way on that one.

The RIA 1911, Glock, and Springfield XD's are all solid guns. I throw in the XD because it's kind of the best of both worlds between the Glock and the 1911 (imho). If you haven't done so, shoot them all and see which you like best. Renting guns can get pricey especially if you're renting in several calibers. However, it's better than kicking yourself in the butt down the road.

The only thing you're likely to find out by asking on these forums is whether one of your choices is prone to problems. Everything else is subject to individual preference. Case in point, I was really excited to get a Glock until I actually shot one. Awhile later I tried out an XD and I knew that it was the gun for me.
