lol, were you laughing during the part where he was getting a construction job and going off about why he didn't have a car, too? And not because it was a funny scene, but because he was so completely unbelievable as an actor during that entire part?Comment

There are a lot more rules and safety procedures these days as a result of the Lee incident, but all live-fire guns used in movies are still very real. Semi/full-autos are blank-fire adapted as you described, but not due to any safety regulations... it's done so the firearm can properly cycle blank ammunition.Pretty sure Hollywierd and SAG don't allow the use of any real guns anymore. It has been several years ago now but an actor was killed during a scene that used a real gun that was supposed to have blanks in it. I think after that they disallowed the use of any 'real' gun.
I know every gun I have ever seen that is a "movie" gun had a plugged barrel and a live round cannot even be chambered. The blanks they use are a slightly different configuration and allowed to function in the gun. They have a small flash hole in the barrel so you still get the muzzle flash and they will build enough pressure to function the slide.
Revolvers, pump shotguns, bolt/lever action rifles, and grenade launchers are all completely unmodified and can fire live ammunition without incident. Most large prop houses also keep a stock of unmodified semi/full-autos for certain productions (Training actors, Mythbusters type shows, etc.)
***Off-Topic Alert***
In the case of the Lee incident on the set of "The Crow", the gun being used was a revolver, so there was no BFA modification. The armorer was an idiot and made dummy rounds by simply removing the bullet, emptying the gunpowder, and replacing the bullet... the primer was still live however.
After filming a scene where an actor loaded the "dummy" rounds into the revolver, the hammer was dropped onto the live primer and moved the bullet into the barrel. Nobody cleared the gun properly between scenes, so when the blank round was loaded and fired in the next scene, the bullet in the barrel was dislodged and struck Brandon in the abdomen.

Clint is one of my all time favorites. I met him in Hawaii filming a movie not long ago. One of the Lieutenants talked to him during which he said he had surgery on his eyelids "in order to see where the **** I am going".
Oh and I agree, horrible acting in this movie.Raising a glass to the Willie McBrides of the world

Milsurp has a good eye for that stopped up M1!
I saw "Gran Torino" just a few weeks ago. I liked it and thought I could tell what was going to happen too. Considering his condition, Walt's thoughtful decision made sense. But it still saddened me.
Just checked IDMb's page for the movie. Didn't know that the actor who played "Trey," the white kid accompanying Sue when she got accosted by some Black tough kids, is an Eastwood.
And imfdb's page on the movie's firearms is pretty good too: http://www.imfdb.org/index.php/Gran_...ective_Specialx

Good movie. I think it would have been a unique ending if somehow, you discovered that he is really Gunny Highway from Heartbreak Ridge. Maybe some pictures on the wall in his home or a shot of his Uniform with the CMH in the closet in the background.
