great, now i am rethinking my 9mm purchase

Kinda, but not really. I bought a SA XD 9mm and I like it. I bought it for fun shooting and also for self defense. I chose the 9mm because ammo is cheap and they are easy guns to shoot and control.

My neighboor, who is LAPD SWAT, told me he wouldnt touch a 9mm with a pole in a gun fight. He says he has seen guys shot with a 9mm and they dont even flinch.

I know the odds of me getting in a gun fight are extremely thin but I wanted some stopping power if I needed it. Now I am thinking its too small.

Dont mention shot placement either. That whole line is garbage anyway. No one can control shot placement in a street gun fight spur of the moment.

Ask your buddy how his .40 penetrates concealment. .40 and .45 is good for stopping a bad guy, but 9mm penetrates better and is a straighter shooting trajectory. If all you are going to shoot is for personal defense and you are wealthy enough to buy the ammo, the .45 is the way to go. For almost ANYTHING else, I actually prefer the 9mm. For a hunting round, there is no other handgun round with as good long distance trajectory and cheap ammo.

9mm cannot be beat for cheap, reliable, straight-shooting ammunition. With hollow point self defense rounds, they are not that bad.

Tell him I had a guy shot 6 times in the back with a .40s&w and lived. And I had a guy shot once in the chest with a .22lr and died. Uh oh, now what

Before I ever bought a handgun I used my uncles ruger 9mm and shot a granite rock the size of can and about 1" or so thick at less then 5 yards.... The bullet bounced off and the granite rock bearly rocked. We thought we missed but looking at the rock you can cleRly see it was direct hits... When I finally turn 21, I didn't even bother to look at the 9mm. It was off the list no matter how good the price was.

And we also learned that shooting rocks is a bad thing, too.

What do you expect? It's GRANITE... shoot it with a .223 and see what happens.

Wow... because a 9mm wont explode a slab of granite, it's junk? Because all these criminals are wearing granite plates...

Shoot a slab of granite with a .40 and a .45 sometime, see how well it does.

SO what, Ive seen guys get unloaded upon by SAW's and not go down. M2 did the trick though!

9mm is an effective round. I prefer .45 ACP personally, but 9mm would do in a pinch.

Most LAPD SWAT guys are arrogant and think they know everything. Trust me I've been there. I think there tight shirts are slowing down the blood to there brain. I have seen suspects shot with a 9mm go down immediately and others run away after being shot with a 5.56mm M4. I don't think cost should be a factor in protection for you, your home and loved ones. The 9mm is a good round if you use good ammo, IMHO +P or +P+, that you can shoot straight and functions in your weapon.
And shot placement is a reality to the trained shooter, even in a gunfight. Although I did carry a 45 on duty because I think, all things being about the same, the 45 is a better man stopper!

lots of people start off with 9mm's and then move on to 40's and then 45's. ask your neighbor if he would throw a 9mm gun at a perp or try to shoot the perp with the 9mm. ask your neighbor if he would run at a guy with a 9mm.

Ah you had me right up til shot placement. Most people will loose the fine motor control to be able to make well placed shots in a firefight. For most, even professional soldiers, just getting the front post on target and pulling the trigger is an accomplishment.

I shoot a 9mm, and I'll tell you what I told my lady:

I may not be as big as some... but I got plenty enough to get the job done...

I keep trying to convince her that size doesn't matter...

Hmm. That must be why our military uses it.

Seriously though, you bought a fine gun in a fine caliber and any buyers remorse should be shaken off by a trip to Wal Mart, where you can buy 50 rounds for ten bucks. I love .45, but the price of ammo these days is outrageous, if I can even find it there.

As far as gun fights and shot placement goes, the lower recoil offered by 9mm does give it an advantage. If anyone who says that it's debatable, the same can be said for any other rounds ballistic advantage. Googling some pictures of expanded HST's should also do the trick.
