Very cool ENG417. Great place to start them out for the reasons you stated. Three means they can go in more directions than you. That's a great age to get them going.
Our family was on a camping trip in the Sierras when our three sons were youngsters. My sons and I were plinking with a 10/22, when my oldest commented to his brothers that they were shooting like little girls. My wife had been watching them out of the corner of her eye, like moms do, and over heard the snide remark. She walked over and asked "Can I try it guys?".
"Sure mom, but be careful." the oldest replied, and handed her the Ruger, "It's empty."
She took the rifle, checked the chamber for load, put in a fresh mag, cycled the bolt, and went 10 for 10 on the dancing can. Should've seen thier faces. When she handed back the gun she ask them collectively "What's the first rule?", "Make sure the gun is not loaded" they answered in unison. As she went back to what she'd been doing she added "Girls can shoot". Vio con Dios. PAX

Man ... Did you get that 3 for 1 deal they had going on for boys about 6 yrs ago ?!?!?!

Thats awesomely cool ... Don't know how you handle 3. I am having my hands full with just one !!!

I was just thinking about taking my ONE son to shoot for the first time. He turns 5 next month. I was thinking about the 10/22 Archangel I have. That way the stock can be shorter for him. I wanna keep the tradition going, cause I still shoot with my dad every week !!!

My boy turns 5 soon and has been begging me to take him shooting. He is a little immature for his age so maybe when he is 6.
