    In my area, the non-shooting public does not exist.

      Well Hankko, they vote all over the state AND they outnumber us!
      TURNING and turning in the widening gyre
      The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
      Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
      Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
      The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
      The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
      The best lack all conviction, while the worst
      Are full of passionate intensity.

        Not yet, at least in Idaho.

          dogs chasing livestock should be put down.the dog could run the livestock through a fence and damage more, even though the dog is just chasing. if someones cows get out you can corral them up call the local brand inspector and charge the live stock owner per head for boarding them and damages.if someones dogs chase livestock and the livestock gets hurt and the dog runs off the LS owner has no recourse.

            The answer is yes.....they chase they get shot. In some of the wilder parts of the country they get poisoned, and that is ok with me too. This isn't about gun ownership and use, it is about property rights. Even the cutest ankle biter can cause havoc with expensive market animals. I wish the lines were clearer for the unknowledgeble, but most rural counties have laws explicitly allowing killing of predators, even if they have a name.

              Even without a name, it's generally anything that threatens or harms stock or crops.

                  My wife's family made their living off livestock and I make mine working with the folks that raise them. Any animal harassing livestock is dealt with, usually shot. It's matter of fact and business like, I don't take pleasure in it myself nor do I know anyone who does. Cattle, Horses, Sheep, Poultry is big business and expensive when injured or killed. If you love your dog keep it in control.

                    Growing up on agricultural land, any dog chasing sheep or cattle was killed on sight. Sheep abort their fetuses if they are stressed or harassed. Cattle can do the same. The owners of the loose dogs are harming the farmer's livelihood, just the same as if they burned his barn or stole his tractor. It's business, plain and simple.

                    Having said that, I have 2 dogs that I love dearly. But if they were to harass livestock, they would be fair game for the farmer to shoot. That is why I keep them on leash.

                    The farmer is not being mean or cruel. He is protecting his animals from the stray dog pack.

                        Cuda, could you quote the non-livestock related posts? I'm having a hard time finding any but two, and those are talking about dogs chasing down deer, which might as well be state-owned livestock they way we are restricted from interacting with them.

                        I really think you are just suffering from moral outrage at the moment. It's okay, we all do it from time to time, but it doesn't change the fact that if you really care about your dogs, you will keep them trained, entertained and contained. It is our responsibility as dog owners to keep them out of trouble. A dog getting into trouble is no different than any other predator, even in play.

                            All three of these examples do have to do with preventing loose dogs from chasing/attacking other animals. The bottom line is that even if a dog scares livestock and makes it run, it could easily trip in a hole and break a leg. This results in having to put the animal down and the owner loosing thousands of dollars.

                            In my case, the dogs would pack up and it was dangerous for our dogs, horses and ourselves. The fact that the dog I shot bred with a young female ended up costing my roommate cash. Not only did she have to pay to take care of the pups until she could find homes for them, she also lost money from not being able to breed the girl with her stud and sell the pups for a lot of cash.

                            If dogs are running loose on your property and you have livestock or other animals, would you wait until your property was damaged before taking action?

                              I don't care how much you spent on your dog if it's chaseing the cattle I work with it will get shot. we don't need broken fences, legs,or other damages because of a careless dog owner.

                                Those points were NOT referenced in those posts. Nor was livestock at any time mentioned...re-read them.

                                Feral dogs running in packs are not an issue with me. I too live in a rural area. But those posts do NOT address those issues either...

                                Again, some Keyboard commandos here tend to act a little casual about shooting someones pet that may have got out, is lost and may not be doing anything at all...couple with the earlier gut-shot comments, lets just say it does not paint a postive picture of us to the non-shooting public...
