    Dogs Chasing Livestock

There was a thread in the rimfire section and I mentioned how someone I know shot two Rottweilers chasing livestock (not herding). Someone else thought it was wrong and that if the dogs were attacking its a different story. The ranchers I know will kill any dog chasing their livestock. A friend of mine had his dog shot while chasing someone else's horses and he doesn't blame them. Livestock is big money.

Will the ranchers you know shoot dogs/animals chasing their livestock? My answer is obviously yes.

Years ago I had a Northern Mendocino CDFG Game Warden tell me he drills dogs he sees running deer. Around here I have a neighbor who uses his M1 Carbine to eliminate dogs who harass his cattle. I do not have any problem with either of these two scenarios.

It tends to complicate the matter when said dogs are wearing level III hard ceramic plate armor.

That seems a bit harsh. Sure, do what you need to to protect your animals but there's no need to purposely make the dog suffer. They are just acting on instinct.

I'm guessing you do not own a dog.

Like I said in the other thread... My dog chases just about anything for fun. Attacking and chasing are a different story and chasing can be easily solved. You said there were two rottweilers meaning they were probably someones pets and they did not oppose a threat. I'm pretty sure I know more farmers/ranchers than a lot of people on this damn forum. I worked at a farming industrial hardware store that specialized in tillage and fabrication building heavy equipment. Thats how I got access to all the property I am able to hunt and most the farmers I know have dogs and they mean a lot to them. Now if a dog is opposing a threat then deal with it. If it's simple chasing theres other ways to deal with it. Like I said if someone shot my dog because he got out while I was at work and chased one of his cattles around the yard for a few minutes well he better hide...

In San Bernardino I wanted to kill raccoons at my house. I call the County, they said could kill any fur bearing animal (rats, can't kill dolphins) that are a threat to my cattle, dogs, or family. The only catch was that I had to kill them, I could not use a slow poison or other painful death. It had to be over and done.

Of course if Rotties are all over your cattle, have you thought about distracting them by getting them a blanket?

I would love to know the name of this game warden. It's not illegal for a dog to run after a deer I'm pretty sure it would not sit well with the DFG hearing one of their officers was drilling dogs that chased a damn deer. Most any dog given the opportunity would chase a deer.

Isn't it illegal to hunt deer with dogs? Maybe that's what he thought they were doing?

all the warden needs to say is "a stray dog is chasing a animal that some day we could sell for a $300 tag" and guess what his superiors would say, good job you just saved the state some money!

I was raised with dog as pets. If any of our dogs chased livestock or deer we would of stopped them and made sure they were properly trained. If they did it the second time they would be shot on the spot. If you love your pets you keep them under control at all times.

Plenty of signs around rural Sonoma county stating that any dogs caught chasing livestock will be shot.

Seem to remember something about dogs chasing cows and causing heart attacks in the cows.

I own two dogs (I just spent over $4Gs in vet bills for a 13 year old Aussie) so I think that that qualifies me as a dog lover.

But I also hunt on private ranches and the rancher's rules up here are stray dogs on the ranch are shot on sight.
