When I hear misinformation, I can't help but speak my piece. I'm the guy that after giving them my interpretation of the law in question, always tells people not to listen to me, anyone behind the counter at a gun shop (this is usually where I am when I use this disclaimer) or anyone with a badge. Instead, one NEEDS to read and interpret the laws for one's self. Also, I will tell them to checkout Calguns.net.

I do speak out nicely IF AND ONLY IF it helps the sale. If it is a sitaution that I speak out and hurt the sales, I will not speak at all.

I'll speak out only if I'm sure about the legal point in question.... most of the time if I open my mouth I find out the law change five minutes before. Also wont do anything to hurt a sale unless it's a safty issue, then you can't shut me up.

I probably would have mentioned to the salesman "well at least this rifle is not on the list The mag well being sealed up in no way takes that Colt or Bushmaster rifle off of the banned list.

Do you confidently KNOW for a fact that an unimformed LE wont take the rifle? Havent we had a few threads here where peoples rifles have been taken? Saying somethine is "gray" is an opinion and not a fact, I didnt know having an opinion makes one an idiot.
Hell, I will be the first to admit to my customers (not just because we only stock the bushies also) that it is somewhat of a gray area. I also admit to them that I myself have done it and I also tell them about calguns.net. I also tell them to search all articles. But hey, guess Im in "idiot" for being wrong on an opinion

On another note, when Im at other local gunshops aside from the one I work and the salesmen starts saying his piece, I just stay out of it. It THEIR bread and butter and its THEIR buisiness and not mine. Sure salesmen are salesmen but isnt that the art of the deal? Hey dont buy that kind of car there, you need this car here? Weather Im at at bike shop, gun shop, swap meet, or any store at all I never butt in less its a safety factor. Im not the type that gets off (NOTE IMPLYING ANYONE HERE IS) on getting people to take buisiness elsewhere or to stir things up just for the hell of it.

Back to answering the original question, I would stay quiet. Not my business to butt in when I'm at a gun show or a store. I'm not there to police honesty. I'm there to look after myself.

+1 on that. If you don't know the score, don't meddle. I have more than once seen people butt in when they should have kept their mouth shut - because they soon learned the taste of shoe was displeasing. And that is a very uncomfortable thing to watch.

I was at Turner's Pasadena when a guy in his mid-40's was looking at one of the Bushmaster Carbon-15s with sealed mag-well. As he is viewing it, and prepping to BUY it, this other guy starts in on "Don't buy that, you see there is this OLL thing... etc." and from what I heard, this rude guy had only broken details of the OLL situation, explaining it partially wrong.

The store wasn't too busy, so both the salesmen and the customer just listened quietly looking at this moron as he went on and on like a yipping Chihuahua. The salesman had amazing patience - didn't say a word and let this idiot go on. Instead of being rude and cutting him off, the next pause this motor-mouth takes, the customer coolly speaks up, holding up his hand in a "stop right there" fashion, and in a slow polite and quiet manner WITH A SMILE says:

"I already know all about it, got several, but I want to buy THIS one because it's carbon-fiber, and maybe one day, I might just cut out the bottom, but for now, you should probably keep to yourself and let me finish buying this rifle". (That's damn near a perfect quote because I remember stuff like that almost word-for-word).

You know, there are crazy people out there like Wes buying up FAB-10s, and for some reason, even knowing the situation, they still buy them.

                  Let the customer be crazy.

Not unless I am asked for my opinion, or I am allready a part of the conversation. Opinions are like belly buttons, everybody has one. What makes you think other people want to hear yours?

Do you guys do this anywhere other than gunstores?

I was at the American Shooting Center in San Diego and I had witnessed a guy with a STAG-15 loading up by way of magazine, he had a pistol grip and all. I let him know what he was doing was illegal but he said he could care less. He said he didn't want to wear out the takedown pin hole in his LR by pulling it open everytime he wanted to load. Later when I was finished shooting I let the guys at the front desk know about it and the said the same thing, they could care less. I have not gone back to that place for 8 months now.

obviously, i will speak up on safety issues. I have no qualms with letting you know how i feel about being flagged by your muzzle...

other than that, i only really butt in when (1) someone is obviously and horribly being taken advantage of (kind old widow about to take the $50 offer for her departed husband's mint condition quigly rifle, for instance). (2) the guy is NOT helpful (somebody asks a question about a firearm and the employee just kinda shruggs. I'll jump in and answer the question)

And there's always exceptions, but the above are the only times I will CONSISTANTLY butt in...

I was guilty of butting in during a PPT I did @ Turner's Chino (no I did not butt the Hotties). Guy behind the counter was passing on wrong info about a Model 41 and another gun which I can't remember to a Calguns member. I couldn't let it pass because the customer is one of us.

Hmm, I wonder what do you expect the range employee to do, call the LEO and have the guy arrested? What if RO mistake someone's fixed magazine OLL as an AW and call the cop? What if RO didn't know better and call in because someone is shooting his registered AW? As a shooter I don't need that kind of hassle, especially from range nazis. Yes, the guy has a illegal AW and he is breaking the law, but that's his own business. If this guy got pulled over and being arrested for possession of AW, or just so happens that there is a LEO shooting next to him, called in the back-up and have him arrested, then sucks to be him. I work at a range. As long as the firearm and shooter's action does not consititute a safety hazard to other shooters, I for one will be careless as how legal his gun is myself.

I dont butt in normally. I only butted in once when my buddy was looking to get a shotgun and the guy told him he doesnt want the model ( it was on sale) he wants this one and comes back with a 1300$ O/U shotgun. I told the guy hes not looking for a 1300$ shotgun. hes looking for a 300-350$ shotgun.
I personally could care less what guns people own. For the most part gun owners are people looking to have some fun. So what if the guy wants a 30 round mag to shoot at targets. Who really cares. I can load my Yugo with stripper clips about as fast as someone can shoot a 30 round mag. I jsut dont see what the big deal is. instead of banning these guns why doesnt the goverment crack down on gangs and violent criminals. They sure as hell dont care about the laws
