    Do you butt in..

.. at the gun shop? For example, you hear someone making a incorrect statement about OLLs or gun laws in general, do you step and say something, or just let it go?

I was just at Discount Gun Mart here in San Diego and I think I noticed someone unknowingly break the law. Some guys were picking up a M1A and I swear to God it had a flash hider on it. The orginal M-14 style hider. I looked pretty good to make sure.. Im thinking the gun shop ordered the wrong model.

I say anything though because maybe the guys were LE or something.. didnt want to look like I was being nosy.

I do speak up, gracefully if possible, without trying to queer a deal.

Of course the gunshops I visit all know the laws so it's the visitor/customer that's usu misinformed.

Since you're on someone else's 'turf', be nice, be subdued, don't 'order' but offer guidance.

I would politely ask to see it, oooh & ahhhh over it & sigh heavily & say "too bad civilians like me can't own one with a flash hider." Only if they ask why would I let them know. They could be LEO & turned around & say something along the line of being a LEO has its priviledges.....

This way is probably the most polite way.

Nope. Too much of that happens in gun stores anyway without me chiming in. The only time I talk on someone else's deal is if the gun is something rare or special, and I merely ask if I might see it too, as in admiration. But when it comes to spouting laws... forget it. I'll abide by what I know to be the law, and it works for me. If the dealer is directly affecting me with ignorance of the law, I will make it an issue; with someone else, it's his house and his rules - no reason for me to be a bad guest.

Of course I would speak up if something is quoted that would put the buyer in danger, like a safety issue, such as if the seller said it was OK to shoot modern shotgun loads out of old Damascus Shotgun barrels or such (which did happen not too long ago, and I DID speak up).

            .

Hey neither you can be too sure about California gun laws.

When I've gone to two different shops... I caught people buying pistols... and they were upset they had to buy locks despite having a safe. And it is a federal law that they have to buy locks with all pistol purchases.

Though stuff that is blatantly obvious. "ALL AK47s/AR15s ARE ILLEGAL" and I just let out a laugh and they realize they are idiots.

The hard part for me isn't butting in, it's shutting up that I have a hard time with.

                  Unless it's a safety thing, I wouldn't say anything.

If it's idle gun trivia talk, I mind my own business. I don't even react if the clerk was handing ME a line. I just give him the "is that right?" look and carry on as usual.

But if I heard a clerk giving wrong advise about gun laws I may step in. Hasn't happened though.

There are some shops where there is just no point to stepping in that type of conversation. That is unless you are fully committed getting tossed out.

i will speak up when a gun shop guy is really low balling some one selling a gun. less than they could get is fine but this $50 crap for a nice s&w revolver or $150 for an original surplus colt 1911 because "those guns are dangerous, not worth anything, nobody wants those."

i remember this older man that was selling his 1911 from korea. it was in exc condition but sold it for $200 due to the lies of the gun shop dolt. the man had tears in his eyes when he handed it over. (don't tell me the guy should have known the value of his gun. make a deal but don't rape him because he doesn't know)
i didn't speak up that time but i always will now. we need more honest gun dealers like ade. he always gives an honest opinion.

i have been told to go and not come back from a few shops(like i would go back to these con artists anyway).

if i hear advise that will get someone problems with police i will give them the proper info as i know it and show them where to find the info for themselves to see. we have to take care of our own.

I would only say something if someone's health was in danger, or if I watched some little old lady sell a Python for $100 . If I saw someone sell something with a flash-hider or high cap mags, I would not say anything.

This might irritate some, but I would probably also tell about half the posters in this thread to pound sand if they came up to me while I was handling a rifle with a flash hider on it and made a comment or asked me if I was a civilian.

This is one way some FFL's are WHORES they would have told the guy that those (Meaning OLL rifles) are illegal and this (what they have to sell) is the only way to own a legal AR.

Those kind of FFL's don't even know the law that they are preaching.

as they are now they are dangerous IMO.

some guy was about to lay down 1300.00 for some sort of Ar15 with the mag well welded shut. i gracefully 'butted in' and mentioned the legalities of owning an open magwell AR. i told him about the prince50, off list lowers, and tried my best to cite some of the laws concerning cali legal AR ownership. about 5 minutes later he was happily convinced that building one with an open magwell was better than buying it with a welded one.

linked him to calguns for further info. I'm sure he has finished his build by now
