Personally if I would have walked right over to the Rangemaster, took him to the gun and let him deal with it from the beginning. I would not have handled it at all..

I don't know.
Maybe it's because I'm an old guy but the few matches I ever shot, I used my favorite guns. Guns that I've owned for a long time, spent money on, shot allot, you know my most favorite guns! Could I ever leave one behind after a match or practice at an indoor range? Yeah, I guess it's possible but I haven't done it yet.
One thing for certain however, if I ever did, you can bet the farm, I would break every speed record known to man, getting back to that range and get my gun. Period.
That's why, I just can't believe the owner of the gun in question, hasn't been back to get his gun or at least called.
Is it just me? I don't know.

Latest UpDate to Found Firearm
To satisfy everyone's curiosity I have the following update:
It was a Benelli M1 Super 90 shotgun, unloaded and locked open.
The match director (also LEO) received NO responses to his broadcast email.
I turned it in to the LEO match director at his station and received a receipt.
After looking at it he said it looked like an LE shotgun that was probably forgotten after an LE training session at our range.
He would proceed with running a trace to find the agency it belonged to.
I haven't heard from him as to which agency.
Don't expect a reward or any more answers but I am satisfied I did the right thing and if it belonged to a match participant I gave him a fair chance to claim it without a runaround.
Thanks for all your comments.Comment

You did the right thing. Imagine a couple of years of trying to explain to police how you are in possession of a stolen police weapon. To satisfy everyone's curiosity I have the following update:

That would be exactly what I would do. Once you take a "found at the range" gun home with you, you've created a whole lot of headaches for yourself."Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them" -Albert EinsteinComment

Is stating that a LEO who would forget his shotgun at the range after a training session should turnin his badge considered LEO bashing?
Seems like the criteria for "LEO bashing" has gotten really strict lately.
There is bashing, and then there is justifiably calling someone out for their actions and mistakes.
LEO bashing = all cops suck
Calling someone out = That specfic person should lose their job for that specific action.
But whatever....here is an idea.....why dont we just ban ALL threads and comments about LEOs period?"Freedom begins with an act of defiance"

M1 Super 90
Actually I was technically Rangemaster (Match Director) on the day it was found. The LEO was match director two weeks earlier for another match. The LE match director and I have a good relationship (I'm not LEO) and I trusted him and he trusted me.
This looks just like it, with some rust:Attached FilesComment
