Different situation, but when I used to trap shot weekly we had an incident where one gun accidently grabbed another guns shotgun when he left. Someone immediately called the sheriffs office.... It was pretty obviously an accident, the guy shot there weekly and left his shotgun (which, if I'm not mistaken, was a HELL of a lot nicer!)Originally posted by KestryllYeah, don't tell that rat bastard Kestryll, he'll shut it down.

If the owner brought a bunch of guns with him that day, he might not even know that he left it at the range. If he only shoots a couple of times a year, you may be waiting a long time before he realizes that its missing.www.culinagrips.com

Turn it in to the cops. You don't know the history of the firearm, and you don't want to get yourself into a mess because 10 years from now it's found out the gun in your possession was used in a murder or something. It may not be the case, but you don't know. If the match director is LEO, ask him about it. See if he can find out who the owner is if it's been registered, or if they can't find out who the owner is and it hasn't been used for anything shady if you can have it back 90 days later. Even if he says no to both, it certainly doesn't hurt to ask, and covers your own *** if there actually is a problem.Comment

I think this is the flip side of all those people who "lost their guns in a boating accident". You just know there are some fishes in lakes going "WTF is going on???"sigpicComment

1.) Report it lost/found to the police - GET A RECEIPT
2.) Follow-up regularly to make sure they are attempting to contact the owner.
3.) Claim the firearm for yourself if the original owner is not found. I believe a LEGR is required.
4.) DONT just "give" it to a LEO. This is an illegal transfer regardless of his LEO status. Please read the Calguns Wiki
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.
