Range etiquette - flying shell casings into next lane

I unintentionally did this to a few folks at a garbage pit range with my Saiga 12. It was my first time shooting it and I had no idea the shells would eject so fast and so far to the right. I was hitting guys 10 feet away right in the head or side. I simply moved to the farthest right position and let the guys I hit try the Saiga as a peace offering.
Now I request the far right lane any time I can at any range. It makes picking up the brass so much easier.

Flying brass is a natural phenomenon at a gun range. If you don't want to be near it, then adjust yourself appropriately, or don't go to the range.

Unless you were intentionally angling the gun to make brass rain on their heads, then there's nothing malicious, and coming off at you with an attitude is rude and misplaced.

Yep, I agree it comes with the territory as far as I am concerned. Sometimes your the one getting hit other times your the one hitting others.

Some people at the range get funny sensitive.
I was shooting my AR and a guy with his son was shooting a bolt action at a good distance to my right, he began to complain about "people with semi-autos" I heard him and suggested that we trade places, he was on the last bench to the right. He told me it was no it wasn't the casings it was the report, the sound was messing up his shot. I told him that his rifle was messing up my shot too and walked away. it's a public range and there people shooting loud guns that fling casings... if they aren't being an *** about it, it's an occupational hazard.

That sucks!

I remember when I was at the range, this one guy and his girl were firing a huge revolver and the sound it made literally just "boomed" - it was all good though. No one complained, everyone just stared in awe and took pictures.

But yeah, I am glad that everyone that day all understood that we were at a range and casings and "loud noises" are to be expected.

Flying brass happens - either you're on the giving end or the receiving end. Facts of Life on the Shooting Range. Of course, there's a point where it does get annoying but only when it's a hot casing dropping down the back of my neck - that's why I wear a hat, maybe a shemagh scarf. I try to put my E&L Brass Catcher on my Ranch Rifle because that one spits it out fast, far, and hot.

For some rifles, I was told, I could adjust it (gas or buffer) to drop brass at my feet. I would rather annoy my neighbors than have a gun that malfunctions because I had to tweak it to not rain brass. Doesn't the Beretta 92 ejects brass differently?

I get hit w/ brass all the time. Usually not a problem. And usually guys w/ .45's which eject fairly slowly. I've asked the RO to move me from guys with really hot reloads - which do hurt a little bit. But I have started wearing the old man style eye protection - with those little side thingies...

Indoor ranges are full of insensitive/sensitive folks! They are either renting the .50 cal pistol next to you, or complaining about getting hit w/ brass or you sweeping their casings onto the range.

Even had a guy standing back behind the barrier and I'm SURE he was raining casings on me on purpose. Gave him the evil eye. Didn't work.

EDIT: I mostly shoot a Beretta 92FS. They eject back and to the right and are really mild. I've never hit anybody to my knowledge. 1911's go sideways (I don't have one, but always get hit with them). My Ruger P90 hits me in the forehead a lot!!

Gee guys nice to know that you are such courteous shooters. Maybe I should set up next to you with one of my braked rifles and set off a few rounds and see if you appreciate my shock wave and dust as much as I do your hot brass pelting me. And no being pelted by hot brass continually is not to be expected at a range - its just plain rude!

Get a brass net/shield etc or set up somewhere where you're not raining hot brass on someone. Try being courteous to your fellow shooter and realize you're not the only one trying to enjoy a day at the range.

Yeah, I did that at iron sights. This guy was raining his handguns 9mm through the opening on top of the partition while I was shooting my 1911. So I got my braked 5.56 switched to left hand, got as close to the left partition as possible, moved the rifle far forward, and let her rip. He packed up pronto and bailed

Agree! Dont sweat the small stuff! I'm to busy having fun to care about other peoples shells flying at me. I have had shells hit me before. All I did was shoot when he was reloading and reloading when he was shooting. Kept me from being right next to him as he was shooting. No big deal.

I just think its a matter of common courtesy. If its something that can be helped with minor to no inconvenience, why not do it?

I like getting hit with brass, thats part of the fun on going to a range, kind of like lap dances at a strip club. Hell, better to get hit with brass than the thing that comes out the other end.

If you were there first and the guy is a jerk, tell him to piss off and go find another lane somewhere else!!!!!! If they are polite, excuse yourself and explain that's part of the game or get a shell deflector to prevent showering with brass(or both). Some people should not be shooting at a public range.

Where I shoot, they do not even have frigging barriers! (Hold on, I just realized you are talking about pistols, my bad) But anyway, I love being hit in the forehead repeatedly by freshly ejected brass from a Garand. The guy shooting it was a friend that was acting douchy at the time though. At least with bolt actions you don't get this problem.

Once shooting pistols, I think I got a shell casing stuck between the side of my face and my safety glasses. Ouch.

One time i had a guys en bloc clip come flying over the wall and wacked me in the head. Caught me by surprise, i have never seen one fly that high, unless he was shooting while standing. They guy was actually kinda pissed at me that i threw the clip behind me.
