      LOL

You mean shot by a firing squad.

            Stag? really?

            hahahahha!

In that price range get a BCM, or pick up a Riflegear upper and make a lower from any of several quality lowers (they are pretty much all the same w/ exception of some differences in finish). Get a parts kit and a mil-spec stock & tube, your favorite handgrip, and a MOE rail kit. You can always bling it up later w/ nicer rails, nice optics, better sights etc.. AR's are like little girls barbies.

The best AR is one with a pistol grip and a mag release button (non-locked).

Everything else is a band-aid...until 12276 is tossed by the SCOTUS this June!

Stag? Maybe if your a lefty, lol. Colt is or was king of AR's back in the 80's and 90's. But since then, there has been many great companies who has made very very good AR's that's atleast up to par with Colt. With the popularity of the AR platform and knowledge of most shooter's today, these good companies know what the shooters want. Heres my top three of the best AR's today starting from #1 on down. Daniel Defense, Bravo Company, LMT. Stay away from unknown companies. Stay away from gas pistons unless it's a completely built gas piston rifle built by a good company like LWRC or LMT, and stay away from the Sig 556.

Lowers are NOT all the same as I read so many state here. Don't pick a lower for it's cool logo for God's sake. Choose one by a reputable company for it's quality and finish. I believe that the old Kaiser Defense made the very best lowers out there. Too bad they are gone but have split to JD and I think Mega, not too sure. Those KR5 lowers were the nicest I have seen, tight precise milspec fittings, very clean and smooth finish. Noveske N4 lowers are nice too.

This. Hang around on these forums for group buys. I picked up an LPK for $45, and there was recently a stripped lower thread for $125 OTD. Add a stock, and you have your lower. As for uppers, it's up to you how much quality you want. Generally, most people agree that BCM is the most bang for your buck. Noveske and Colt are also top of the line. But RifleGear has started selling their branded Daniel's Defense uppers, and people have been loving them. If you don't care about brand names, just go with any of the other ones that have already been recommended.

Grease is no good on ARs? First I've heard of it. Can you elaborate? And specifically, why is it ok for M14s but not for ARs?

I am VERY happy with my Stags. Thousands of rounds thru all three with no problems.

WOW lotta stagg bashing lol, I have a stagg and a bushmaster upper on a cal guns lower and to tell you the truth cant tell a single diff.
The best AR is the one in your price range period, buy one and slowly add what you like.
