Why do you shoot on BLM land?

Why do you shoot on BLM land as opposed to privately owned ranges?

Do you make a day out of it or just go to zero your hunting rifles? Do you tend to just squeeze off rounds and shoot washing machines or focus on the fundamentals? Do you shoot different stuff in a different way on BLM land (bump firing Saigas, etc)?

Do you bring different stuff to BLM land? Tables or a sidearm on the hip? Dogs?

I'm just curious about why people enjoy shooting on the sparse remaining areas that are open to us to shoot at.

Side question here, where does one find maps or lists of BLM land in CA. Google hits I found were useless. I'd like to make a trip to something like this!

There's no chance of getting shot by the idiots who don't understand gun safety.

Actually, I worry that sometimes there is a higher chance of getting shot!

I love the freedom of it - away from the overly regulated and fearful ranges... especially if you want to shoot something bigger than a 9mm or 22lr. What do I bring? A rake and trash can. It's all of our responsibility to keep these lands clean!

I shoot mostly on BLM land and in a CalFire-run forest. No fees. No obnoxious rangemaster (no offense to rangemasters out there, to be fair sometimes I wish there was one). No restrictions on what gun you can shoot, what target you can use, or how many shots you can fire in the same second.

The BLM land is 10 minutes from my house. If a rabbit shows up, I can even take it down and bring it home (or a deer in season). The forest preserve is farther, but it's beautiful, it's quiet, and the rangers like me because I pick up the trash and the brass.

Sometimes I'll bring a table, a bench, targets to sight my rifles and several guns. Sometimes I just bring a stapler, printed targets and a gun.

Usually we make a day out of it, bring food and such. It a nice feeling that there is a remote spot far from everybody that is "yours". The best part is that the only people there are the ones you invited to go with you. That plus, there is no regulation on what or how you can shoot.

I just hope people who go out to BLM land are responsible and tidy, It would kill me to lose that land cause some people couldn't take the time to clean up their mess.

As for you not being able to find a spot online, thats because we are all protective of our spots and want them to remain a secret to everyone else. Although you might be responsible and clean up after yourself, if we post the location here, anyone could read it and go and trash our "private spots".

                        Exactly!

If you know of BLM land in your area, you have several options. First, there are regional offices where you can get maps. Talk to the rangers there, some of them will know where you can go. Ask the gun shops nearby.

Even if you don't know where to go exactly for shooting - some ranges are small and improvised and can only accomodate a few shooters at a time - go explore them by yourself. Follow the trails, talk to people, some will tell you where you can go. Sometimes it's all about listening to where the gunshots are coming from...

You can get shot just as easily on BLM as a range, I wear body armor at both sometimes. The freedom of drawing from a holster, strings of fire(no 1 round per 3 seconds). Mr T of course. Shooting at various ranges, drills, transitioning from primary to secondary weapons. Mag dumps. Fun.

The wise, learn from the mistakes of others.
The smart, learn from their own mistakes.
The others, well......they just never learn.
