      Hey, let me see that 12GA 'other' over there.

      A shotgun is still a shotgun.

          A mossberg cruiser IS NOT a shotgun as defined by federal law. They cannot be transferred to 18yo's, and can only be transferred to people 21yo or older.

I really don't care. If I'm being very specific in my request then odds are I've already decided and made up my mind as to what it is that I want to purchase. Thank you mr gun salesman, very kind of you to inform me what you would rather shoot, but let us both be glad you are not me, and I want something different.

            I have had this occur with buying an 18" 870 (Don't buy that one, get the 20" model, it holds more shells!), a walther PPK/S (That gun is a piece of ****, don't buy that), and a RIA 1911 (Buy a Kimber instead kid, they never have problems).

            It is most annoying.

            I do agree with the OP. I always ask if they mind if I drop the trigger, and where their preferred "safe direction" is if they have one. Always hand the pistol back muzzle pointing to the side, action open.
            I allways show a customer what they ask for, or what will fit their interests or needs.

            Frankly, I don't care if someone recreationally uses drugs on occasion. Call it the libertarian in me. But if you can't simply take a shower and NOT hit the bong before you go to a GUN STORE, to buy a deadly and dangerous piece of machinery, you fail the common sense intelligence test.

            And any gun store employee who releases a firearm to someone who fails that test, also fails the test in my opinion.

            Look, it's just not that hard to be nice and respectful, but firm. "Look, I'm really sorry man, but I can't sell you a firearm while you're high or smell like being high. You're more than welcome to come back another day and I will be happy to help you."

            Chances are, they won't come back, and you haven't compromised your customer service.
            Thank you, I could not have said that any better.

            Fair enough, but shotgun works alot better than guage or shotty.

                I am a customer. I have never worked in a Gun Store. I have worked in retail in my younger days. Yes, I know that customers can be idiots.
                I will also tell you the 3 types of businesses that I feel have treated me with less than the courtesy and respect I deserve;

                1) California Department of Motor Vehicles.
                2) United States Dept. of Social Security.
                3) Several (more than 1) Gun Shops.

                As I get older, I do find that the treatment has generally improved. I now see that my son (age 23) does not always get the same level of service that I get.
                I agree to follow all of the 'rules' listed by the OP under the following condition;

                Every Gun Store Clerk or Owner agrees to speak to me as if I were a 'Certified Genius', I am standing in front of you with pockets full of hundreds, and I am directly related to John Browning and Samuel Colt.
                Thank you.

                  I also agree to the points the OP has made.. however, I've seen some major follies made by people running the counters. Recently I went to a shop and some guy was showing these 2 young dudes the laser on a gun.. he goes, "look at your chest" and the kid looks at the red dot pointing at his chest and goes "whoa..." then looks up.. and the gun is pointing right there. Not a demo model, but the actual gun. I dunno if I'm being too sensitive about that.. but I was pretty surprised.

                  Another annoying thing I ran into on a few occasion.. some clerks showing their displeasure towards any caliber smaller than a .45 ACP. Almost in a demeaning fashion to the customer looking at a 9mm..

                      I think courtesy and respect are sorely lacking in many gunstore transactions...on both sides of the counter. I've never worked at a gunstore, but as a customer, I'm embarrassed/disgusted by 19 year olds talking about their Call of Duty guns with ACOG sights and how they're "gonna git dat same **** here!" I'm also dismayed at what I consider blatant discrimination on the part of gun sellers, particularly when dealing with younger, less well-dressed customers. Having recently been there myself, I can tell you that you're treated pretty much the same way an 18year old wearing a hoodie and cargo shorts showing up at the Lexus dealer is treated. Never mind that he might actually have the coin to buy stuff, he is immediately pegged as a "lookie-loo" at best and either ignored or even steered toward the Sigmas and Hi-points.

                      Strange thing I've noticed is that the age bias is pretty darn strong. It seems like anybody older than you automatically thinks you're a dolt. People younger than you generally give you a bit more respect. I'm 35 now, but I sure as heck remember being in gunstores over a decade ago and treated like a stray dog that wandered into the AKC championships.
                      "Two dead?!? HOW?!?"
                      [sigh] "Bullets, mortar fire, heavy artillery salvos, terminal syphilis, bad luck --- the usual things, Captain."

                          Read the question carefully. 11e. Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substances?

                          Unlawful user. This is California, there is a strong chance that they could have a medical marijuana card. It is not my place, nor am I allowed to invade someone's privacy by asking that based on mere supposition. Notice it also says stimulant. How many people here drink coffee or soda every single day, and don't feel right if they don't? Guess what, you're technically addicted to caffeine, a stimulant.
                          My posts are my own opinion and reflect no official positions of anyone other than myself.

                            It's a federal form, where federal law applies. If you believe that it's ok to answer "no" to that question if they are a California-lawful user of pot, then ask to see their card.

                            If not, they are an unlawful user of pot.

                            Even so, stinking of pot means they still fail the basic intelligence test.

                              "Stimulant", according to the feds, is limited to a defined drug substance or an analog to a defined drug substance. Caffeine is not a drug, and therefore not relevant to the question.
