Sleeping with/next to a loaded firearm?

I have two rooms i sleep in, mbr has a Walther p99 loaded, chambered and decocked in a biometric safe chained to my bed, I keep a 1911 in condition 1 in a safe that is one turn from unlocked. I have a small kid so a shotgun at the ready is out of the question

While hunting~ USP up near my head/pillow Safty on. Rifle at right side- usually not one in the chamber.

At home- Both a USP and a Shotgun within arms reach- Both loaded/chambered and safty on.

((I know things will change once we have kids ))

Shotgun on side of bed between wall/bed. Empty chamber. Safety OFF. AMMO in side saddle.

Always sleep with a loaded gun, USP 40 with Winchester SXT's gun is on safe, empty pipe. No amount of gripping or groping in my sleep is going to chamber a round, disable the safety and fire it ;-)

I also always sleep with a locked and loaded gun with in arms reach of me with the safety on. Para Ordnance P-13 with Hornady 200gr hollow points.

+1 on empty pipe, I may do strange things while sleeping, but I've yet to rack a slide. I don't want to squeeze one off while I'm dreaming.

Dont sleep next to a loaded gun, but Im a light sleeper, and I can cover the distance to the AR in about 2 seconds, then another 5 to open the case and load it.

That sounds like about 6 seconds too long....

Just wondering what people's thoughts are on this.


Let's say you are camping out in the open, or in a small tent, and you want to keep your rifle/shotgun nearby. How do you do it safely?

I was a tent camper.... I prefered a revolver tucked under the edge of my sleeping bag... (point and shoot, repeat if necessary)

Camping - Glock 17 loaded and chambered, Streamlight M3X attached, only inches from my reach. Sometimes I keep a Winchester .357 lever by my side as well (loaded but not chambered).

Home - Glock 17 loaded with Winchester SXTs, slide locked back, ready to chamber, Streamlight M3X attached, in the nightstand with extra mags.

I don't have any little ones, and will put the gun away when out of the house or when kids come over.

Me and my housemates have all agreed not to store loaded weapons, so i keep an SKS with a stripper clip right next to it. It works out okay since the dogs provide a good early warning system. I roll around so much that i'm not sure there is a pistol with enough safetys to prevent me from earning a Darwin Award if I tried that. The SKS fits around corners fine and packs a better punch anyway.
