Ironic that I am in a trial on possession of a stolen shotgun too. Called Sheriff's department. Told to do an online report. Went to the store next door to it, some exercise equipment store, they said of John is a very honorable man, I am sure you will get your gun back.... If he calls us we will let him know. Going to get my Private investigator to try and track down the owner. Wanted the dam gun for this weekend too.

FFL doesnt own the firearm.....the person that bought it does. If it cant be delivered, it must be returned to the original owner. All the FFL is doing is storing and paperwork. It would be a stolen firearm.Contact the LE agency that has jurisdiction over the place of business. This is more fraud than "stolen firearm" though as the firearm is technically owned by the ffl upon receipt. The weapon doesnt belong to the buyer until DROS is initiated/complete. Definitely get onto the ball right away and LE may be able to catch up with these folks if there is some ill intent.Comment

Or maybe it's a foreclosure and he's been up to his neck in paperwork and other issues processing unemployment forms for his employees and going through his DROS paperwork one by one and contacting customers as he can to arrange to complete the transactions?- Rich

It doesn't surprise me they went out of business. I wanted to throw some business their way but they were crazy expensive on everything. They quoted me $175 just to DROS a rifle. I said screw that and did it for $60 at Golden State Tactical. They also never had anyone around to assist you. They also always seemed to be out of stock on anything I was interested in. But in the rare event they had what I was looking for, the prices were outrageous and scared me out of the store. They seemed to be an old style gun store from 40 years ago. Stuffy and hunting oriented with expensive grade show guns with top grade walnut stocks. Very little modern stuff of any interest. Even the employees were old timers just like the products. Too bad. You never like seeing a gun shop go under. But they were a dinosaur.

Doh! You posted while I was writing my post. Good to hear you got your rifle!
Hopefully if he re-opens he will change his operation to be more modern and reasonably priced."Show me a young conservative and I'll show you a man without a heart. Show me an old liberal and I'll show you a man without a brain." - Sir Winston Churchill

Sadly, that's how it goes when a company is having troubles. It doesn't surprise me they went out of business. I wanted to throw some business their way but they were crazy expensive on everything. They quoted me $175 just to DROS a rifle. I said screw that and did it for $60 at Golden State Tactical. They also never had anyone around to assist you. Most companies don't actually "own" their inventory... the bank owns it.
So hard times come, credit gets cut down or cut off, suddenly they still have to pay for their existing inventory, but have no cash to replace it.
This is exactly what happened to the retailers that started shutting down a year ago.
Prices go up because they still have fixed costs such as rent and utilities, and to some degree, payroll (have to have someone minding the store), and they still have credit obligations, so now, a purchase that used to service fixed costs and credit now has to service fixed costs, credit, and replacement inventory. That's not going to work at discount prices.
From there, it's a death spiral. Customers stop coming in because of low inventory and high prices, the few sales they do get only depletes stock, and eventually they're gone.
It takes money to make money, and the only way to grow a business is to invest up front. When the economy takes a dump and customers quit buying, the only way to remain afloat is either using credit through hard times, or the owner being able to support the business and eat the loss.
Again... as inventory sells out, only the items that won't move remain. They seemed to be an old style gun store from 40 years ago. Stuffy and hunting oriented with expensive grade show guns with top grade walnut stocks. Very little modern stuff of any interest.
There was a time when every shop had a few high-end "tokens" that were pretty much for display only. They either never expected them to sell, or they may have been forced to accept them by the manufacturer (a shop owner can't always pick and choose what inventory he will carry on any particular product line, most suppliers have minimums of each model that must be stocked).
Even at the "new breed" of stores, and even "black rifle" stores... nearly every shop has at least one or two $4,000+ pieces on the wall. Customers love to drool over items like that.
Nothing wrong with that. If I walk into a gun store, the first person that I'm going to seek out for advice is not going to be the gung-ho kid. I'm going to find that reserved guy sitting in the corner who's been around the block a few times.Even the employees were old timers just like the products.- Rich

Glad to hear the OP got his gun back. Last time I was in, there were only consignment guns around the showroom wall. The owners been in dire straits for a few years... too bad his idea of a "Mans Store" never came to fruition. It still would've been like a Cabela's or Bass Pro but Sac didn't have anything like it til Sportsman's Warehouse came to town. I hope he comes back with another location...
Wonder what happened to Gary Thiry??? He's been following Badger Johns for a couple of moves now... wonder if he finally retired cuz of this??Comment
