You should look in on the Castle Doctrine thread. You can basically presume that you are risk of great of bodily harm and use force to defend yourself and family inside your home if there is an intruder in it.

You just can't lay a dangerous or lethal booby trap. Reasonable men could disagree about the booby trap legislation.

yeah, unfortunately there is plenty of crime in fremont. you can contact karen blount to be included in the monthly email with the fremont crime spreadsheet which tells you what crime was committed on what street. a bit of an eye opener.

my wife's car was broken into a few weeks ago in the middle of night and her laptop stolen from behind the driver's seat. yes, it shouldn't have been there - she had a bad day at work, was sick, doesn't normally bring it home, forgot.

some punk broke out the car window. about 30 feet from where we were sleeping, in a small, quiet townhouse complex.

I think a case can be made for police or firefighters entering your home and being torn apart by a beartrap. I can understand that ...however the fact a burglar can turn around and sue you after you took him down in your own place is beyond me. You should lose all your rights at the moment you begin your little illegal deed.

Seriously, any kind of trap you set up that causes great bodily injury and can be activated without warning or without you there can get you into heap big trouble. The theory is that a child, firefighter or other person may have a right to be there and become seriously injured.

Only if you are inside it at the time -- or attempting to rescue someone who is inside when the unlawful intrusion takes place.

To reduce wall penetration in condos or apartments, consider making the first round (or first two rounds) #6 or #4 birdshot. It may not stop an intruder DRT, but he'll certainly be discouraged.

If you're worried about burglary, pick up some of the First Alert window/door alarm units. These noisemakers come in a 3-pak and use a magnetic switch to set off the alarm. They're fairly cheap and you can buy your neighbor some and mutually agree to call the cops if you hear them.

Most burglaries occur in the daytime while folks are at work. Leave your radio tuned to a talk station and facing the door/window so they can't tell if you're home listening or not.

Only in summer. In winter the water could freeze, thus being capable of causing great bodily harm.
