The "shotguns only" restriction in the area between Victorville and Barstow is not limited solely to the areas immediately surrounding the OHV area.Anecdotal example. Already been discussed in this thread. There is a military base, highway and 3 ATV parks in this area (None of which was mentioned in that post until pointed out by the Goldleviathan later). Special situation meant special rules. This is an exception NOT regular BLM policy. Also there are signs posted there about the restrictions so nobody is going to accidentally start firing off an AR 15. Mitch also claimed that "Much of San Bernadino County is shotguns only". That is simply not true. San Bernadino County is huge and only a small portion has that restriction. He was being disingenuous to say the least. And trying to scare away others from using BLM land on the basis of fear, uncertainty and doubt IS FUD.- Rich

Just keep bumping this thread up to the top. Hopefully everyone will get a chance to use public lands just to piss of Mitch and nagorb. Anyone just joining us, go to the OP's first post. All the information you need to know about BLM shooting areas is there. Some of these guys are haters and don't want to share with you.Last edited by ScottCoberly; 11-02-2009, 10:44 PM.Comment

Nobody is going to get in trouble as there are signs posted and the area is 300 miles from you. It constitutes about .0000000000001% of BLM land anyway. It's just one lame anecdotal example.Last edited by ScottCoberly; 11-02-2009, 10:46 PM.Comment

One map covering that specific area.
Point being, we don't know and can't assume that the only reason the BLM restricts to shotgun-only is due to the OHV parks and military installations.
Without detailed maps from the BLM (or from http://www.firearmsmaps.com ) you can't make a blanket statement that target shooting of any type of gun is legal simply because it is BLM land and further than 150 yards from a structure.
The basic BLM maps from the new link in the first post (that link was added today) give us candidates for legal BLM shooting areas, but we must contact that area's field office.
Example: BLM areas along Hwy 79 east of Temecula are now closed to all target shooting due to the proximity of homes in the area. The only areas of the Palomar area of Cleveland National Forest... NF or BLM, that are open to target shooting is the relatively small area of Orosco Ridge.
Yes, these are exceptions, but these exceptions can be costly.
GENERAL BLM policy is that target shooting is cool, provided we follow "leave no trace", but it is up to us to be aware of the exceptions, and we can't get those from http://www.geocommunicator.gov/blmMap/Map.jsp?MAP=LAND- Rich

Cokebottle, the geocommunicator.gov link was added to the first post today but it appeared later in the thread for some time now. However the link to BLM website with the rules has always been there. Find BLM areas using the OP's link. then go the BLM website for California. Every BLM field office provides a map of restricted area on their site. You'll find that not very many sites are restricted as they are generally very rural. Sure there are exceptions but do we really need some jokers to point out every one of them? If a person can find this forum and read this thread, they can certainly navigate the BLM website. Don't treat everyone as if they are an idiot. It's offensive. If there is any question about it, just call the local field office for your area.Last edited by ScottCoberly; 11-02-2009, 10:53 PM.Comment

Now go to the Palm Springs BLM office's site and try to get ANY information.
There are areas within that office's area that certainly are open to OHV operation, yet the office has a blanket statement that there are no legal OHV areas within Riverside County... then they go on to indicate that they make this statement because access involves either traversing private land or using public roads that do not allow OHV.
The Palm Springs office's site has no information that I could find regarding target shooting.- Rich
