    Thoughts on the GSG 5?

What are everyones thoughts on the GSG 5? Seriously thinking about purchasing one of these before they are discontinued... Anyone recommend a local place to pick one of these up cheap ( San Jose/South Bay area.. ) ... Cheapest I could see online is 420 + 65 DROS/transfer = 485.......

I love mine but, I would not recommend one to anyone unless they already have a few other .22lr rifles. If you already have at least 2 10-22s and a couple of bolt action .22s, a GSG5 would be a great addition. As a stand alone .22lr, you can get much better for less. Like, two or three stock 10-22s for the price of one GSG5.

I do not think you will find a cheaper GSG 5 local for under $485. That is a really good deal, I am probably going to buy one as well from that online dealer. A local shop in San Diego charges 550, plus tax and dros.. so over $600

My only .22LR is a GSG-5 and I love it, wouldn't have done it any other way.

Worth it to go with this gun or just an old 10/20 and slap on a pistol grip?

If you get a 10/22, why add the pistol grip? I personally can't stand the look of the 10/22's that are all dressed up.

The GSG5 has the tacticool look that you are paying for. Unfortuantely, I doubt any of them will last for 100,000 rounds. Made of pot metal. Not many made since it was only in production for a few years. Parts will be difficult to find. Not a simple dissassembly procedure.

A 10-22 with a BC folding stock and PG will cost about $150 less than a GSG5 and last well past 200,000 rounds plus, there are always going to be lots of parts for 10-22s around and they are pretty much DIY things. Can find magazines almost anywhere.

Even after all of that, I still love my GSG5 but, I realized it was a high priced gimick gun when I purchased it.

A GSG 5 is an investment.

                    They aren't making any more.

Atlantic Firearms is selling them to calgun members for 420 shipped. Add about 65 or whatever your FFL charges, and you can have the gun OTD for under 500. I'm not sure what version it is though. And they supposedly only have 65 at that price so better act quick if you really want one.

As someone mentioned previously, just because it's not made anymore doesn't mean its an investment. See also: WASR22.

Buy it on its merits and whether you really, really want an MP5 clone in 22LR.
I'm on the fence with this one. After all, this price is nearabouts to a dedicated 22LR upper and if you pay a little more, you are in beltfed 22LR upper territory.

At $300, it'd be a steal. At $500 in your hands, I'm on the fence.

                        Regards,
                        -g

PS. IMO, there will be a future MP5 clone since H&K licensed the design to Umarex (hence the need to kill off GSG5). Based on the feedback about the Colt Umarex M4 clone, I'd probably spring for a GSG5 NOW if i decided I couldnt' live without an MP5 knockoff

                        - parts compatibility: you can replace the buttstock and front HG but the pistol grip and upper/lower bits are incompatible.
                        - build quality: reports are NOT favorable for Umarex.

Some people can buy full capacity mags in CA, legally. Or just use it out side of CA for most people.

I have one and it's so fun to shoot. Well, it'd be more fun if it's 9mm, but still...
