I'm sorry, I have to disagree.

Yes, if you have the means to keep your brass in check, it is a must to do so (catcher, screen, etc.), but if it is happening out of dumb luck, and there is no cure, then so be it.
It IS part of the range experience. If my GF is out there getting hit by hot brass, she can handle it. I mean, what do you expect when at a range? It is part of the range experience... get used to it.

Something tells me your brass is like your wake on a boat. You are responsible for it. If it were to bounce say into someones safety glasses and blind them in one eye...me thinks you are going to pay up in court.

Yeah odds are slim to none. But as others say....practice courtesy if at all possible.

It is part of the range experience, yes people need to be considerate of others on both sides. You cant just let your brass go willy nilly and at the same time if your getting hit by brass why don't you set up a barrier, or ask them nicely to do something about it. Loose the condescending attitude and people at the range will be more likely to work with you.

Another wonderfully brilliant response. GREAT idea, Dude! Instead of agreeing that a little common courtesy might be in order, I get a suggestion to set up my own private range. You, sir, must have won many accolades for your obvious intellectual accomplishments.

Truly, I can only shake my head in disgust at the number of negative responses received as a result of my call for civility and courtesy. And of course, there is the obligatory derogatory and condescending statement...."Deal."

Look, if it were that rude or that thoughtless, it seems to me that ranges would have permanent brass screens installed, or require they be used by anyone shooting a semi-auto. Since I know of no range with these permanent installations or requirements, I'd have to logically assume that those with your opinion are in the minority.

I have been showered by hot brass. It sucks, sure. If I can't find a place to move to, I just live with it... I don't hold any ill will toward the person doing the shooting. When I am at a public range, I am concerned with more pressing safety issues - such as people sweeping me, etc.

And why the mention of the car being hit by brass? What is your vehicle doing that close to the firing line? Back it up and, um, DEAL.

Garands are babies. Since you have an M1, you are most likely aware that they rarely fling the brass with much authority. Especially when compared to CETMEs, FALs, and Ruger Ranch Rifles. If you had read and made an effort to understand my original post, you would have seen that I was referring to brass being ejected at high velocity. By the way, it would be nice if you could come up with something a little more original in your attempt at denigration. But again, very typical of the R.E. guy mentality.

Your declaration of me having a closed mind is more than a little amusing. Perhaps a brief refresher course will be illuminating. You advocate for property damage and human suffering. I promote just the opposite - yet you outlandishly seek to brand me as the one with a closed mind? You might want to think about that accusation a bit more.

In terms of your ability to withstand a fusillade of hot brass, well, I for one am impressed. But let's see how well you weather the storm when some guy comes and sets up next to you and starts blasting away with his FAL or Ranch Rifle. Please let us know the outcome when you finally become weary of being hit by brass being ejected at 40 mph.

Oh, and the car? It wasn't mine (and really, we all know that old saying about assuming something). It belonged to some poor sap who happened to be parked in a stall at the old San Gabriel Valley Gun Club. Again, someone with a Ranch Rifle ejecting brass 30 feet across and behind the firing line was hitting another patron's car. I alerted him to the fact that he was damaging someone else's property - to no avail. He kept on shooting mindless of the damage he was causing because he was, apparently, a Range Experience guy.

One guy was shooting his Mosin Nagant when he opened the bolt pretty fast, sending a nice ****ing hot steel case right onto my face. **** range experience, stick a fiery 7.62x54 steel case on your face and let's see how docile you are with the guy next to you. Everyone of course was wearing ear protection so you couldn't hear my scream in agony. After the line was cleared I came up to him and asked if he wouldn't pull the bolt so hard, so the case doesn't fly out with so much authority. It wasn't the speed that got me, it was the distance. He complied and would extract slowly so it just popped it out a foot away, otherwise I would have set up my 14 round semi auto .22 next to him and would have just pulled the trigger sending cases his way.

It stuck to my face before I could swat it off and of course I used my bare hand to do that so it burned my hand as well. My brother in law has stories upon stories of when he was in the Army and how many a time a rogue case would fly onto his face and literally stick onto his face like a magnet.

Okay, I thought about it a bit more and I still think you have a closed mind. People who think they have all the answers often do.
I do not advocate for property damage or human suffering, but what I do believe is that some brain power and understanding can go a long way. Semi-auto firearms spit hot brass. If you are next to said firearm, you may be hit by flying brass. This is not rude and thoughtless, this is just the way it is... does that sound closed minded? Hardly.
Like mentioned, but you conveniently did not reply, why don't ranges employ permanent brass screens or require that one be used?

While I think it is good to avoid pelting with people with brass if it is practical to do so, I also think that if you are getting hit with brass sometimes just a simple adjustment of your seating/standing position by 4-6 inches can make a difference between being pelted or the brass falling in front or behind you.

When I go to the range I get hit with brass. If the shooter doesn't try or just can't avoid doing it I try to adjust my spot. If I still get hit, well, I wont let it ruin my day. Who knows he might be shooting the same caliber that I am and lately I've been collecting brass.

IMO it all fall under what are reasonable expectations. If the brass was hitting with such force to actually cause injury or damage then I might say something (some ranges might now allow you to put up a divider between lanes as it blocks the RO's view). The shooter if, he is aware that his gun is shooting brass out with enough force to hurt/damage something can be reasonably expected to be somewhat proactive. but frankly most guns don't shoot their brass out with that much power. Asking everyone to put brass catchers on their guns is not reasonable IMO.

Bottom Line: If after taking all reasonable precautions you still get hit with brass, well, that comes with being at a private range. BLM or a private range can solve that real quickly.

FWIW my worse "brass catch" was at OC Indoor where a really hot handgun casing when down my tucked in shirt and stopped right above my belt. Took a couple seconds to clear my handgun and set it down safely before I could start working on getting that brass out. They have partitions setup, but brass always seems to go over them. Part of the territory IMO.

on the whole, I don't think of shooting as a prissy kind of sport. however, there's a difference between expecting some rough and tumble experience at a range, and being a butt. if someone says to you, "hey, you're doing damage to that guy's car" and you don't make some adjustment, you're just being a butt.

respect for other people and their property just seems polite. and possibly wise, considering that practically EVERYbody is armed at a range.
