Forgotten guns

There are many reasons people have guns at TSA checkpoints. Sometimes they are using a bag they often carry a gun in and forgot about. Sometimes people are flying last minute expectedly. Sometimes a spouse or other member of the household placed or left the gun in the bag unbeknownst to the traveler.

No one should EVER plead to these offenses. All of them (25400, 25840, and 171.5 require proving knowledge the gun was there). Tough to prove when you have someone with no record who was visibly shocked when the gun was discovered and stated to officers a credible narrative of how this happened.

FYI, here in Sacramento, they take the gun, issue a misdemeanor citation with notice to appear, and help you board your flight by expediting as necessary.

Once when I was moving from one state to another (driving), I was grabbing all sorts of stuff out of a drawer in our old house to move to the new house. I was using my backpack I usually travel with. One of the items in the drawer was a loaded 9mm mag.

I always keep my shooting bags separate from my travel bags.

I thought I unloaded everything out of the travel backpack at the new house. I had to fly out the next day. Next thing I know TSA is pulling out the loaded mag from a pocket I forgot to check.

Fortunately that was in a free state and the TSA agent said no biggie. She acted like it was just a normal recurring event. She told me she'd have to keep it unless I could figure out a way to get it back to my truck before my flight left. I told her it's now yours.

I'm sure I'd still be in prison if that had happened in a blue state.

I?m very cautious and paranoid, you?re insane not to. Generally I?m fine with TSA and checking firearms. I had an annoying interaction once at the check point. I went up to ask if I could bring a bolt carrier group in my carryon bag and the guy was cool and said probably best to check it. No problem, I do so. When I got back a supervisor was waiting for me and grilled me and told me it?s good I didn?t bring it through because that definitely would have been referred to police. I said yeah, that?s why I asked. She says it?s very good you did. I say yup. Not being able to let it go she says you need to be smarter next time. lol.

All gun parts are banned, including empty magazines.

I was "randomly" selected for additional screening this last trip(used my .mil id for TSA pre check) they wanted to swab my phone off all things. And no I didn't unlock it lol

You fail to recognize if firearms were allowed on planes, the hijackers would have also been armed...

As I said before people are stupid. I don't want people carrying guns on planes.

I had to go to Detroit from Sacramento. While waiting in line, I noticed I had a couple of .22 rounds in my bag. Pulled them and tossed them in the trash. Didn't know it at the time if I would get hassled but I didn't want to chance it.

+1 on not using your range bag as a carry on bag especially on an international flight. An Irish friend of mine did just that. His bag got swabbed at the security checkpoint in Shannon which resulted in him being detained for questioning, his checked bag being pulled out of the hold and him and his bags being meticulously searched. He missed his flight, needless to mention.
