    Forgotten guns

Last year over 6500 guns were found while people were going through a airport check point.
80 % of people claim that they forgot that it was in their bag, purse or luggage .
Having a ccw saved a few from being arrested..
I used a few backpacks when I go shooting. One for my guns and one for ammo. No matter how late it is I always put my guns back in my safe. I don't worry so much about putting away ammo.
Carrying ammo to a checkpoint is a no go also.
I find it hard to believe that so many people are claiming that they forgot where their guns are.

If 80% of them claim they forgot them what percentage of them claimed they remembered putting them in there?

What percent of them (you guys) claimed an ex-spouse/ex-girlfriend put them in there to frame them?

And what percentage of them claimed it's all a government conspiracy because they know too much?

        (I'm guessing it's 5%, 10% and 5⅞%.)

Yup. I use the same duffel whether I fly or drive. sometimes when I went home to visit parents, I would go shooting with buddies. Grab the bag, throw in mags and ammo to take to the shooting spot. The bag always has lots of crap in it. Black mags are easy to miss in a sea of black in the bag. Sometimes I miss a mag. What made it worse was that pre-9/11 they didn't care if you had empty mags in your carry-on. Post, they did. Guess how I found that out?

Another circumstance was I drove home with the same bag I always use. Went shooting with the buds, and I always just take my defensive mag out instead of unloading the mag. It's my favorite mag anyway, has a nice little bump pad on the bottom, etc. Went shooting, etc, then drove back to kali. After 12 hours on the road I was too tired to unpack the bag. I unpacked as the days went by to wash clothes, etc. The defense mag settled towards the bottom of the bag.

Next trip home, I flew. That's right, never checked the bag for mags, and they confiscated my favorite SIG mag with 15 very expensive rounds in it.

The airport police here will give a warning first time if taken through TSA checkpoint and tell you to take it to your car or give it to someone not flying.
But you can carry at the airport before the checkpoint.

            I do.

I used to work airport security, you should NEVER fly with carry on bags you also use to carry guns, mags, ammunition. It only takes one forgotten item to seriously f***up your travel plans.

you will also receive a fine from the TSA for bringing a gun through the checkpoint. They can be upwards of $10,000.

I flew from LAX to Heathrow in London, then a flight to Johannesburg RSA and then to Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. Spent a week hunting there then boarded another flight from Bulawayo back to Johannesburg South Africa where I found three 22 rimfire rounds in the backpack that I carried through three different countries security checks.

I quickly and quietly disposed of them inside a food wrapper in a trash can.

When I traveled through Heathrow recently my packpack and my person were checked for residue at the gate. Never use a range bag for traveling. As a side note, only white people were being tested. If was a multi race passenger load and I saw no people of color tested. Guess it was easier than dealing with claims of profiling.

Pre 9/11 my dad and I flew out to Vegas from Palm Springs, He had a Derringer, 2 shot 22LR in his toiletry bag that he kept there for when he was out of town working. He drove so he felt it was better to have that than nothing at all. He forgot it was in there, got it on the plane leaving PS and when we went to fly home from Vegas they caught it. We were questioned and then let go, they asked if there was anyone to leave the gun with that could ship it back to him but it was really rusty and messed up from being in that bag for years so he told them to dispose of it as he wasn't about to shoot it in that condition. long story short we almost missed our flight because he forgot it was in there, so it really does happen by accident once in a while.

I’m very cautious and paranoid, you’re insane not to. Generally I’m fine with TSA and checking firearms. I had an annoying interaction once at the check point. I went up to ask if I could bring a bolt carrier group in my carryon bag and the guy was cool and said probably best to check it. No problem, I do so. When I got back a supervisor was waiting for me and grilled me and told me it’s good I didn’t bring it through because that definitely would have been referred to police. I said yeah, that’s why I asked. She says it’s very good you did. I say yup. Not being able to let it go she says you need to be smarter next time. lol.

I got caught with a firing pin in my brief bag at TSA once. I had just returned from the SHOT Show, and didn't realize that bag that I had used to carry samples in still had the firing pin inside. The pin had got stuck under a divider between two sections of the bag. I didn't know the divider wasn't sewn down, and something could get lodged underneath it.

Long story short, the Police were called and I got grilled for quite a while and they called my work to verify my employment and story why I had the firing pin. I got a warning letter in the mail saying if I ever got caught again I could get a fine and possible jail time.

I used to keep a 380 Beretta in my locking briefcase as I traveled around town visiting vendors in some shady neighborhoods. I got a 9pm call from the boss to get on a plane first flight out. Standing in line to go thru TSA I?m next up, I go into my case for my boarding pass and notice the butt of my pistol in the side compartment. I calmly close the case and tell the TSA gal that I left my boarding pass in my car and would go fetch it? I still feel real stupid about it 20 years later.

Interesting wow. I kind of assumed I?d be able to talk my way out of any scrutiny with the police by being ?I mean? it can?t shoot a bcg?? I?d have to read the actual regs. The websites all say guns and a firing pin or BCH isn?t a gun. Wonder what they would say about an o ring or a retaining pin?

Some of 'em are 'stupid.' Other times...???

Decades ago, not long after obtaining a carry permit, I went into a shop to have a suit jacket tailored. I stripped off the jacket I was wearing and the tailor reacted to the 1911 in a shoulder holster. I had honestly forgotten I was even carrying and it even took a few seconds for me to grasp what the tailor was reacting to. In those days, it didn't create the 'sensation' it would have today. He was used to seeing them in that the shop worked with the local PD.

This is why the above advice of never using your 'range bag' as luggage is a good preventive measure. It comes under the heading of not grabbing something you are accustomed to simply because you're comfortable with it. To one degree or another, we all tend to be creatures of habit; but, you can tweak those habits to avoid problems. (It's something I still find bothersome when going into the hospital and court house in that they don't allow pocket knives and I've been carrying one of those far longer than a sidearm.)

Do some people lie to cover for their own 'mistake?' Sure. Will some lie to deflect from what amounted to bad decision-making? Certainly.

But, it's not all about that. Sometimes, it's just a matter of too many things to think about and, by reducing the number of things to have to remember, the less likely you'll be to be 'occupied' at the wrong moment. Of course, government actors seem to see their job as creating so many lists that one can't possibly reduce them sufficiently; but, that's another story.
