Stolen Rifle

I had a .22 rifle stolen from my place of business.
I need to report this theft to keep myself compliant with the new law.

Here is the fun part:
I had the police respond to my place of business after hours last week.

So, here it is Monday afternoon and I cannot find the firearm that was standing in the corner of my office in plain view.

The EMS and police were inside.

I have on video a uniformed person carrying out (they tried to hide this) the rifle.

What are the chances of anything becoming of this? The gun is maybe worth $200 or so, it's more sentimental because it belonged to my Uncle who served.

Should I just report the theft and leave out the part of having video showing the person or throw them under the bus for being a thief?

P.S. I hate having to lock **** up in my place where it should be safe. I should move to TN or another free state but I digress.

Cannot even say to stay frosty, even the guys who are sworn to protect cannot be trusted these days.

And for a couple of hundred bucks they could land in legal trouble.

What do the armchair legal minds think about how I should respond?

Report it to the Internal Affairs unit of the police department. Neither police or EMS need thieves in their unit. Include a copy of the video.

Penal Code 25250
(a) Commencing July 1, 2017, every person shall report the loss or theft of a firearm he or she owns or possesses to a local law enforcement agency in the jurisdiction in which the theft or loss occurred within five days of the time he or she knew or reasonably should have known that the firearm had been stolen or lost.
(b) Every person who has reported a firearm lost or stolen under subdivision (a) shall notify the local law enforcement agency in the jurisdiction in which the theft or loss occurred within five days if the firearm is subsequently recovered by the person.
(c) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), a person shall not be required to report the loss or theft of a firearm that is an antique firearm within the meaning of subdivision (c) of Section 16170.

Penal Code 25270
Every person reporting a lost or stolen firearm pursuant to Section 25250 shall report the make, model, and serial number of the firearm, if known by the person, and any additional relevant information required by the local law enforcement agency taking the report.

Make a copy of the tape. Do NOT give them the only copy. Then report it. Be prepared to answer why the weapon was not secure in a safe. Especially if no one was there.

Unacceptable. You are not the first victim of his/hers sticky fingers. 5 minutes after seeing that video, I would have posted it on every social media, gun forum, etc, with a simple question, "Where is my Rifle?".

Backup copy with a friend, not on your premisis. there might be another break-in

Neither can I.

There's gotta be a reason why the uniformed person took the rifle. At the very least, the person who took it, should have left you a written receipt (with their name / ID # date & time on it) stating they took the rifle and the name / number of a detective / supervisor to contact regarding the details of the seizure.

I would not call but go the agency (EMS / LE) in person ASAP and speak to a IA supervisor or watch commander.
