You're probably not going to find it on the shelf at a LGS. You're going to have to get it shipped for transfer or ask your favorite LGS to special order it for you.
Your other option would be to get your C&R and COE and order it to be delivered right to your door.Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

I've seen it at Sportsmans Warehouse before along with 45 Colt cowboy ammo but it's been a good $1 a round. I have seen old stock that's been sitting there a while for less. I reload 44-40, 44 Russian and Special and 45 Colt. I generally use Unique or real black powder. I've got a 44-40 Marlin.Comment

OP, here you go. You will have to order it and have it sent to your LGS.

44-40 like 45LC is a easy and forgiving round to reload. I suggest starting out with TrailBoss if you are brand new to reloading, that power will fill the case and make it far less likely to double charge or do any harm. A cheap press and dies is all you need and since it is a not a semi-auto rifle round you won't shoot as much ammo per range session. And if you don't like it, you resell the press for nearly what you paid for it, but should warn you, reloading is addictive.sigpic

44-40 is NOT an easy round to load... in the beginning. Lot's of issues revolve around crushing the very thin brass at the mouth of the case. The 44-40 is a necked down case and easy to buckle, the 45 Colt is straight walled, has thicker brass, and is much easier to load. Also, if this is going to be used in a rifle with a tubular magazine, you will have to make sure you have a good crimp to keep the rounds from being driven back into the case by the recoil of a fired round (a well known problem). There is a definite learning curve when loading 44-40.
This site will keep you plenty busy learning about the 44-40, https://sites.google.com/view/44winchester/introduction
ETA, Trail Boss is no longer being made and is currently unobtanium... unless you are willing to pay crazy exorbitant prices on the secondary market. Check out the many Cowboy Action Shooting websites for lots of info on loads for the 44-40.Last edited by 4DSJW; 08-25-2023, 8:37 PM.Comment

A Lyman 310 tool with dies for 44-40 would be my choice for reloading if you?re only interested in that one cartridge. The ammo exists and can be special ordered, but it?s expensiveish and annoying to get. Lyman 310s aren?t cheap but they?re really easy to use and easy to store unlike a bench mounted press. A lee hand press is similar but a bit larger and more affordable.Comment

Correct on the lack of ease loading 44-40 and difficulty of obtaining Trail Boss. It is much easier to load 44-40 if you seat the bullet and crimp separately. I do this with all my pistol calibers. Trying to seat and crimp is much touchier to set up. One of the good points of loading black powder is that the bullet can't telescope back into the case. I crimp the same for smokeless and blackpowder though.44-40 is NOT an easy round to load... in the beginning. Lot's of issues revolve around crushing the very thin brass at the mouth of the case.
