Insults aside, there does seem to be a theme on CG telling posters what they should do rather than how to do what they asked about. And then they get mad at the poster for not detailing the route and itinerary for their trip. Should they detail their visit to Nana in Irvine on the way? Taking the 73, its a toll road.

OP is looking for a safe place to store his firearm in SD while he in Mexico. It doesnt matter why, what route, method of transportation, if he wears jeans....

OP, I think Discountgunmart might be your healing.

But what do I know, I'm low IQ.

Mk2dave, thank you, and L84CABO, thanks you for just providing what was asked.
Why travel to Mexico, my brother who is a vet is flying in from FL. I will pick him up and we are going to travel to see our uncle is also a vet, He needs a few things done around his house, he is a tough old guy but not as mobile as he used to be. He was able to provide a great living to wife, who recently passed away on his small benefits. Its the first holidays for him being alone. They we married 52 years. Agreed TJ is a SH, I have completed my pretravel plans with 2 back ups to the first. We cross then hang a right, follow to coast, then head down about 45 minutes. His residence is minutes from beach, not that we are there for that and most likely will only get uncle to slow down for 1 hot meal. Remember, I only ask a question.

Start with the penal code - you can't lend or have someone unrelated keep the gun for you (there are many details, this is just a rough overview). Because of this, if you give it to a person it must be an FFL (there is a post above talking about this). And if it's not a person you're giving the gun to, you're looking for a short term self storage. Most of them wouldn't be considered safe storage and there are some state and some local storage laws that you might get exposed to.

With all of that said, I would agree that using an FFL to hold it for you might be the best option, if not the only one. You can't even leave it with a buddy.

Good luck...be safe...and bring me back some TACOS!

** They're right off the 5 too...Get off at SeaWorld Drive, head inland across the bridge and take a left at the first traffic light (by the gas station). Then they're down a little ways on your left. And the taco shop across the street is decent.

Works out to $95 for the storage contract, first month of storage (probably applies to the first day overnight that the gun spends there) and the DROS which is probably going to have a 10day wait at the time of pickup.

A $50 detail strip and cleaning at a gunsmith would definitely be a better deal.
I would not mention to the gunsmith that you need to store it.
Just ask how long it will take to clean it and when you can pick up.

Take it to ffl for cleaning and pick it up on way back. No dros involved.

I am pretty sure that the storage contract and DROS requirement is because most people looking to store a firearm are people who have been court ordered to get rid of their firearms.
If you can't pass a DROS when the storage is complete, the storage facility gets to dispose of them if you don't keep paying the storage or find buyers for them.

                What about a pawn shop?
Don't know what you'd do with the ammo - that's also a no go in Mexico.

Contact a CA FFL dealer near the border and ask them if they provide a storage service.

When CA laws about loaning were recently amended (effective 01-01-2020), "storage" became a type of "loan" and the CA legislature enacted an exemption for specific types of storage loans.

One type of storage loan can apply to the OP, if all of the following conditions are met:
                          1. The firearms are registered to the OP. [PC 27883(a)]
                          2. The transferee is a non-prohibited person aged 18 or older. [PC 27883(d)(e)]
                          3. The firearms are being stored at the transferee's residence and they will not leave the transferee's property for the duration of the storage loan. [PC 27883(b)(c)]
                          4. The firearms are in a locked container or in a safe or disabled by a firearm safety device. [PC 27883(f)] The OP will need to retain the key/combo to the container/safe/safety device.
                          5. The storage is for 120 days or less. [PC 27883(g)]
                          6. No compensation (money/goods) is given for the storage loan. [PC 27883(h)]
                          7. There is a document that details the conditions of the storage loan (why and how long for), lists the firearms (make, model, serial number) being stored and is signed by both the OP and transferee. [PC 27883(i)(j)]
^CA DOJ BOF is supposed to have a form for this, but they have not released it to the public.

                          (h) The loan is made without consideration.
                          (i) There is a written document in a format prescribed by the Department of Justice that explains the obligations imposed by this section that is signed by both the party loaning the firearm for storage and the person receiving the firearm.
                          (j) Both parties to the loan have signed copies of the written document required by subdivision (i).

In addition, there are "secondary exposure" consequences if someone unauthorized gets access to the gun. A big mess that reads as a mine field for gun owners. Combined with unfriendly DAs, it's often just not worth pushing the limit.

No you can't say that. You can't give alternatives, that is absolutely forbidden! You can only answer the question directly. Even if the question is vague or leaves out important details (like flying or driving), doesn't matter, if your IQ was high enough you would know those details.
