ATF Form 4473: If a frame or receiver can only be made into a long gun (rifle or shotgun), it is still a frame or receiver, not a handgun or long gun.Comment

Hollow point bullets make a larger than caliber hole, at the expense of penetration. With larger animals penetration depth has to be considered first.
You don't state the caliber part of the question, but if it were small or wimpy for bear, such as 9 mm P, or .45 ACP, then hollow points are not going to penetrate deep enough on a large bear for reliable vital organ perforation. So, FMJ or hard cast with a 50% meplat nose.
The above is good advice, even for .44 Mag handguns. Barrel length and action type also come into the equation.
If you are shooting a .338 Lapua, then an expanding bullet may be better than a FMJ.

I haven't been up to date lately, but you make want to verify what VS has been hawking with the wokeness and body positivity and inclusions being introduced to the once great Angels.... may not want to be vulnerable.Originally posted by ysr_racerPlease don't bring logic and reason into an interwebs discussion

I think Harrell would recommend slugs for bear.Comment

You want big
For black bear a .357 is likely enough to do the job with most any bullet.
For grizzly 10 MM with cast bullets are about the best choice. .44 or .45 revolver bullets with cast slugs are good, but limit you to 5-6 shots. You are unlikely to have the luxury of getting a reload during a bear encounter.Comment

So, in the real world...I know an Alaskan hunting guide who carries a AR15 with 30 round mags. He told me when a charging grizzly is coming at you, it's mag dump to the nervous system, poste haste."I kill things for a living, don't make yourself one of them"Comment

Well, a record grizzly was killed with a .22 rimfire rife: https://www.ammoland.com/2014/11/wha...izzly-in-1953/. So, an AR could work, but that does not make it a good choice.Comment

9mm is more than enough.
It will blow his lungs out.
