I have 2 bear specific loads 10mm with 200 gr hard cast pushed hard @ about 1250, and .45 LC 335 gr LBT hard cast pushed to 1275 or so.

A paint ball gun with pepper balls seemed to work pretty good against dumpster diving black bears.
If you’re hunting bear in California, any non-lead hunting round should be fine.
For bear defense in grizzly country, a 12 gauge with slugs or pretty much any handgun you can carry.
Ammoland did a study of a bunch of bear defense cases and found the type of gun didn’t really matter.
