- Covid/2020 election/riots impacted the industry in a way we had never seem before
- Inflation during late 2021 and throughout 2022 has kept ammo at this "new normal" level of 35 cents/rd for 9mm, 60 cents/rd for .223, and .10 cents/rd for .22LR.
- The Buffalo and Uvalde mass shootings that occurred in May 2022 killing ~30 combined resparked calls for gun control and more legislation
- On May 31st, Canada announced their handgun ban which further fuels gun owners understanding that legislation eventually leads to confiscation
- California also announced their own "largest gun buyback program ever" during the same week. Presumably more laws to come.
- The same day that Canada banned handguns, US President Biden tried to make the case that 9mm rounds blow lung out of bodies in an eery allusion to claiming those rounds are too powerful
- Today on 6/1, NY Gov. Hochul announced a bunch of laws including raising age of semi auto rifles to 21, requiring permits for semi-auto rifles alongside handguns, and banning body armor for civilians
- We do not know what official laws will be presented at the federal level, but speculation includes red flag laws, universal background checks, raising age of purchase to 21, and safe storage requirements.
- Furthermore, the US Supreme Court will be releasing their decisions on two politically loaded topics by July 1st: right to carry firearms (NYSRPA) and states rights to ban abortion and overturn Roe V Wade.
- In addition to all of this, we have the midterms in fall 2022 which has historical always caused a baked in level of panic buying.
My question to all of you given the above points, have you noticed any panic buying as of late? Do you foresee it occurring?

Official 2022 Panic Buying Thread: 6/1 Has it started?

My LGS has more guns than they have room to display. The prices, even for off-rosters, in the CG Marketplace seem to be dropping as are the amount of guns that even seem to be moving, I'm seeing the same ads, even some reasonable ones but for ho-hum guns for months now. Also with inflation, gas and food prices, I think at least casual buyers who already panic bought a pistol and perhaps a rifle/shotgun during the plague are sitting this one out. It's generally more important to pay your bills and put food on the table than to acquire and panic buy more overpriced guns and ammo.
Of course, it's early days and we could see a gun and ammo buying panic again soon. But average people are hurting financially from the battering the Potato is giving us. Wealthy people don't give a **** and will always just buy whatever they want, whenever they want, regardless of cost. So in short, me personally, I bought too many guns, if there is such a thing, last year and earlier this year so I am holding off on the few that I still sort of want, but definitely don't "need". Same with ammo. I have enough to get by for now and the prices seem "stuck", so I am not really motivated to go out and pay those prices or even more ridiculous prices if there is a panic.
I do think this Summer will be a fecal show for America, we are promised rioting, looting, murders over the Roe v Wade ruling and now with a spate of mass shootings, assuming that Justice Thomas and Co won't wimp out and dilute their NYRPA ruling, we may see similar over the SCOTUS 2A opinion. We are forecast to see massive rolling blackouts all over the country because morons are in charge of America's energy policies and they are obviously clueless about how to meet those needs and it will be amplified for us here in California as soon as our temps spike any day and everyone HAS to crank their energy hungry ACs. America is not on a good path because we elected an administration that is actively moving to literally destroy our country so things are going to get worse before they get better but so far, most people I know who wanted a gun or guns have them and the prices, the non-availability of certain guns and ammo and the hoops already in place will discourage many neophyte gun buyers I think.
We shall see! Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride.Last edited by Capybara; 06-01-2022, 4:23 PM.NRA Certified Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor, Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer

Those are all good points. I forgot that part of the panic buying frenzy during 2020/2021 was fueled by the fact that Americans got $1000-$4000 in stimulus checks. I would bet that a good chunk of that money directly translated to firearms and ammo purchases.
I agree that if panic buying does occur, it likely won’t be because the normies are worried about their safety like during COVID. It seems like it will be selective buying for parts they are worried will be banned like AR components, standard mags, body armor, lower receivers, etc. We could also see continued demand for .22 conversion kits so folks can still afford to shoot.
I also agree that we are guaranteed some level of unrest this summer given the events on the horizon. Those events always have the capability of making the average citizen feel unsafe. The unsafe feeling causes demand for firearms = the original panic buying cycle continuing once moreComment

Except for the panic buying, usually summer is when the prices of firearms lower and I can find more deals in the marketplace. Last 2 years were unusual and couple with recession is looming, I am hoping this summer I can find the guns I want at a price I am willing to pay.Comment

Wait till the interest rates hit upwards of 10% and more. Then you’ll see everyone dumping all luxury items. Right now the FED interest rate should be about 10% if not higher. Banks should be loaning art 14%. That’s if they really wanna stop the inflation or slow it down a lot. But they are simly doing as little as possible hoping it will stabilize it.Comment

That happened in the 80s and it will happen again!

Thought not immediately, and because money is fungible, I really did spend 100% of the $$ I got from my good old Uncle Sam, on guns and ammo across the last year. Good times!Comment

And in 1999, and 2004, and 2006, after Sandy Hook 2012/2013, and around 2018, then again for the shamdemic....
It's recurring, but I think we've hit max capacity of anti-2nd Amemdment laws in CA where now anything new won't cause new panic purchasing here, but may see it arise in other states.
I think most of those who would be apt to panic are still reeling from their first-time purchases last year of paying surplus of $2,000 for an out-of-the-box Glock 19, or $1,500 for a used Mossberg 500. So any new panic numbers will be much smaller.
That, and disposable income is going to get a lot tighter in weeks/months to come. And combine that with oversaturation of people trying to sell ofg their used guns, or those pseudo-gun owners that reluctantly bought during the pandemic because they thought Soylent Green was upon us.
Unless of course, Newsom pulls a Trudeau out of his butt. Then all bets are off: scream and wiggle in place at the gun counter.

Absolutely. Harleys, classic-cars, 2 seater sports cars, boats, jet-skis, gym equipment, fine-arts, jewelry, grandma's ashes, GUNS, etc.
Just waiting for the bargains.

Would bet you they claim inflation has been tamed by the mighty Brandon by Oct. as for panic buys we get to watch the country do it not us.1. Compared to what?
2. At what cost?
3. What hard evidence do you have?

if they're smart, they would have stock up on ammo already. if they are paying attention to what potato is doing, plenty of clue to gather where the economy and country is heading.
we are in the most unstable and difficult situation where everything can turn south quickly. potato is creating so much pain and burden in all direction that most americans are not able to come up for air. they are drowning and potato are abandoning them much like the americans in afghan. instead, he's sending 40 billion to ukraine and nothing for his own citizens. That, and disposable income is going to get a lot tighter in weeks/months to come. And combine that with oversaturation of people trying to sell ofg their used guns, or those pseudo-gun owners that reluctantly bought during the pandemic because they thought Soylent Green was upon us.
i hope people are awake by now but that's just too optimistic. most people's head are buried in the sand despite of what's going on. if/when that happens, i'll just enjoy the circus from my living room. it's all i can do.Unless of course, Newsom pulls a Trudeau out of his butt. Then all bets are off: scream and wiggle in place at the gun counter.

Not sure where to post this, but I was just at my favorite FFL's store. Somebody took his website down because he didn't have some sort of "special" internet FFL license BS.
Anyone else hear of this happening to other FFLs?
I can't find anything online about advertising needing a special permit.Comment
