I hate it when people call a mag a clip. Its NOT the same thing, everyone does not "know what you mean", and no i wont let it go. It bugs me to no end when I hear "Clip" being used the wrong way. TV, movie's, books, songs, no one gets it right. I have almost sent a letter to the cast of all the CSI's because not one of them can get it right. They need to fire their tech adviser. It's like me calling a dog a cat and just saying "Oh, its all the same". Two totally different things.
"Calling an illegal alien a "undocumented worker" is like calling the drug dealer hanging around outside your kid's school an "unlicensed pharmacist."

I agree with the distinction between clip and magazine, but there are some powerful examples of usage to overcome.

For example, Marlin says their Model 917 .17 HMR has a "7-shot clip magazine".

And I can't find it just now, but I believe I have seen a military pistol manual referring to clips.

And these are the magazines I think of, locally.

            Naval Weapons Station.. Nice.

Too bad they're looking to develop it - it could be potentially disasterous for the two ranges nearby.

In my experience, people that refer to magazines as "clips"(Yes, I've done it when I was a kid and stopped when I did the research and discovered I was wrong.) tend to be the same people that keep their fingers on the trigger, hold the handgun sideways, sweep you with the muzzle, say things like, "Don't worry it's unloaded.", do not clear the firearm first before handing it to you, and have caused negligent discharges and involuntary manslaughter with firearms.

So yeah, a red flag goes up in my head when I hear someone refer to a magazine as a clip. I hope to goodness it's just a newbie who is willing to learn the right way. Not someone that can't be bothered to learn the correct terminology, why the hell would they be bothered to practice safe gun handling? If I take someone shooting and they dismiss my concern for correct gun terms and safety, that's the last time I invite them.

I don't want some goofy asshat that calls it a clip handling a deadly weapon around me, sorry if that makes me a bad person.

i reject your semantics, and substitute my own!

is a tube magazine still a magazine? is a drum magazine still a magazine? the definition of a magazine is "A container for cartridges or shotshells with a spring and follower to feed cartridges into the chamber of the firearm." It may be detachable or an integral part of the firearm.

there are many different variety of magazines, and all are magazines. Similarly, there are many variety of CLIPS, and all are CLIPS. the definition of a clip is "a cartridge container designed to rapidly reload the firearm's magazine". an "En Bloc" clip is one variety. A stripper clip is another. The Mannlicher-type clip is another (http://www.surplusrifle.com/carcano9138/operations.asp).

just because there are different kinds of apples, doesn't mean they aren't all apples. and just because there's different kind of clips, doesn't mean they aren't all clips.

as for where i got my definitions of "clip" and "magazine": nra firearm glossary

What your calling a clip is a stripper clip as in the kind of clip that loads a magazine the clip in the picture is the kind that people get mixed up with magazines.

When they call a magazine a clip that is what they are mixing it up with not a stripper clip.

                      got it ?

I personally know a few people in the military, but aren't internet mall ninjas, who call them clips too.

I don't know why calling a mag a "clip" makes someone more ignorant than a person who can't spell for example (and I think the relentless clip thing is similar to ohsmily and spelling) but hey, what do I know...I'm dumb enough to have said clip almost my whole life.

I'm predudiced against people who have terrible spelling and grammar (and who constantly mix up words like "clip" and "magazine" or "brake" and "break").

What about site and sight ?

No all kidding aside I really don't think I'm being anal retentive to say there is a difference between MAGAZINE and CLIP.

And then there is also a difference between stripper clip and the kind of clip that the M1 Garand and Mannlicher carcano uses.

The stripper clip as I'm sure 99% of you know is used to fill a magazine or even a C MAG style drum.
