I figure At least I tried to spell it correctly and used the spell check thingy.

If it didn't catch the word and my horrid spelling came thru OH WELL. I gave it my best shot. (no pun intended)

OK now my secret is out. and you guys thought I just acquired better spelling skills ? HA

Fair enough...but you must not hang around many engineers or you'd be used to the english butchery by smart people.

I actually spell check the reports for the engineers that work for me and the President of our company (Mechanical engineer) that I work for.

I blame western prosperity. Most American's have so very few problems in their lives that an instance of someone using the wrong word for something is grounds for uncontrollable anger and flaming.

Also, gun folk tend to be pretty simple minded, so they get all confused and offended when they don't understand what someone is saying due to a terminology breakdown.

One day I was assembling some furniture. I asked my ex-girlfriend , "Can you hand me the Phillips screwdriver?"

She reached over and gave me the flat head screwdriver. With a bit of understanding I handed it back to her and said, "No, dear, I needed the Phillips."

I could see the words floating in her mind. Flat head. Phillips. Screwdriver. Tool. "Oh, I'm sorry. Is there a difference?" she said.

"Well, yeah. The regular screwdriver has a flat head. The Phillips has a cross at the end."

"Hmm... I always knew there were different kinds but I figured they were all just called screwdrivers. Don't they all do the same thing?"

                "Well, yeah, they do."

"Why not just call them all screwdrivers?" she asked.

                "Well...because they're different...you see, well...they're just different..." I said.

                "Oh." she replied.

With a patient look of reassurance I got up, reached in my tool bag, grabbed my Phillips and walked to the kitchen.

I cracked open the ice cold Pepsi I knew I had in there and took a refreshing swig from the can. I looked off into the distance and pondered my words and their significance to both her and I.

"They're just different." I said to myself. "Just different."

Just wait till someone hands you a "Reed & Prince" screwdriver when you ask for a Phillips

Many of the larger Craftsman tool sets come with one Reed & Prince screwdriver. I find them handy to take to the grinder and turn it into a scratch awl or something useful as I don't recall ever seeing a fastener with a Reed & Prince recess in it.

I haven't yet trained my wife to tell the difference between the "BLUE" Phillips screwdriver and the "RED" Reed Prince screwdriver.

however she does know the difference between the Philips and the flat or straight slot as her father called it.

But since its only a matter of color and shape it shouldn't be long.

I've been correcting people for years and will continue to do so. It bugs me when people use the wrong/inappropriate word.

Are "podium/lectern" and the phrase "begs the question" high on your list?
